Don't Starve is, in my opinion, the only survival game worthy of calling itself a survival game. So many other games seem to think you just slap a hunger bar on a generic action RPG and suddenly you have a "survival" game. Their survival mechanics ultimately feel like tedious busywork or an annoying distraction keeping me from the questing, monster fighting, or whatever else is the actual focus of the game.

Not so with DS. Staying alive is the sole, central focus of the game, and it's not easy either. You have to carefully calculate every action you take. Do you know where you can go to reliably find more food if you get low? Do you have enough fuel to get through the winter? One little mistake could easily see you starving, freezing, or going insane. You truly feel like a hardened survivor if you manage to keep your character alive for a long time.
