The game definitely shows its age. The story in it is really good and I recommend it for that alone.

I can’t gauge how dated this game might feel to an average player today, but I can say that back in 2007 it blew my socks off thoroughly and completely. I think the story makes it worth experiencing, at the very least, no matter how clunky the gameplay can get, because it’s such an impressive and expansive dark fantasy tale.

Every chapter has its own distinct mood and its own self-contained theme that gets meticulously explored by the end, so much that you could see them as a series of 5 shorter standalone games. But they also bounce off each other masterfully, playing your hopes and disappointments like a piano. The final pair is particularly effective, giving Geralt some brief family respite away from all the preceding social crap, only to pivot towards a ruthlessly tragic conclusion (which is, interestingly enough, never spelled out loud, yet punches you in the gut all the same).

It’s also a mostly linear experience, which guarantees a steady pacing, much unlike Witcher 3 or other open-world mammoths. The closest comparison here would be BioWare games from the same era, so if you’re familiar with SW KOTOR or Dragon Age Origins, you can jump in without worry – but even if not, I highly encourage trying this masterclass in nuanced storytelling.
