Fun tracks with with an enjoyable meta layer that pushes you to improve

I'm not a person who normally plays racing games, but I decided to give Phantom Spark a shot. So I have no idea if it's good compared to other racing games... but I enjoy playing it. It certainly has a nice vibe that I enjoy, and the controls feel smooth.

That said... I don't get the theme/story. Who are these characters? Why do they all talk like racing is a philosophical topic? What is a "Phantom Spark" and what purpose is there to all this? Maybe I need to keep playing the single player to understand... but I'm more confused than anything else. Maybe it's my fault for trying to extract meaning out of a racing game, but there was a lot of effort put into the theme/story, and I feel like I'm not getting the intended effect. And based on every review I read, no one seems to care enough to talk about it.
