I've been out of the "Warriors" loop for some time. One of the things that kept me out was the linear nature of so many of the games. One game I did very much enjoy was the old Dynasty Warriors 6 Empire. It had great preset warriors. Awesome customization. VERY importantly the campaign was a true sandbox, non-linear.
