A beautiful game with plenty of stuff to do.
Sadly it requires having friends because most encounters with players end in PvP instead of friendship. Another down side is the requirement of a X-Box Live Account. But as long as you have played Minecraft in the last year or two you should most likely have one being forced onto you already.

I forgot to mention that the game desperately needs a decent tutorial for PvP or ship maintenance. You only get told how to patch a single hole and how to raise the mast but by the time you actually encounter players and get shot up to a point where you survive but have to repair, you already forgot how to do it. Game doesnt tell you to aim for different areas on the ship either for more damage. (You wont sink a ship by hitting the same spot 50 times)

I would recommend getting it on sale for 20 bucks, not the full price imo.

I love this game!
I've been playing this game for a very long time now, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys first person combat, customization, multiplayer interaction, quests, and all things pirate! Some things to watch out for of course are griefers, long travel times, and a lack of player combat imagination. However, as a positive, the game is always changing and listens to the players wants, so you never know what new and exciting things will happen next. I personally enjoy the game for the pirate customization and unique pirate selection, story quests, unique unlockable items, visual quality, world lore, and multiplayer with friends. The seas are ever-changing and (at least to me) quite exciting!

I'm trying to seriously describe my feelings and experiences with this game so those interested can genuinely see what the game has in store before a purchase. Plus, it's basically a huge rant about my negative outlook, but whatever, I don't care. Most people don't take this stuff seriously anyway, let me be.

Right off the bat, I love the art style of Sea of Thieves. I find the environments beautiful and the characters goofy, yet charming. The "High Seas" is your basic form of gameplay. It's an open environment where you can do whatever you want alongside other random players in their own crew. It does allow pvp to occur as well, which I personally dislike (to an extent). Let me make this clear, I dislike playing the game for two hours or more and then having one group of people who happen to be more skilled than me or show up at the right time to take all of my hours worth of gained loot in less than five minutes, especially if they have a bigger crew and ship than your own. Some people find this challenge thrilling and I envy those folks. Everything else about High Seas is quite enjoyable. "Safer Seas" is the pve mode, aka the mode Rare (the company who made SoS) doesn't want you to play at all. In Safer Seas, Rare took out the ability to earn a lot of money and experience, plus they don't allow players to purchase certain things and level up past a thresh hold because you don't have the opportunity to run into a player based threat. This practically forces you to play with people. So, if you like pve more than pvp, like myself, there's nothing you can do but get bullied when you come across players and lose all your progress for the day.

I play the game in virtually singleplayer since my crew quit. Now, in High Seas, I'm the most vulnerable target in the server and an easy kill. When I'm on shore or away in general, others can easily sneak up and steal my cargo and ship or they can sink my ship without me even present. Then, if it's a "fair" fight, most of the time, I come across more than one person in a larger ship and they can sink me easily with pure numbers in manpower all killing me and sinking my vessel before I even respawn. Literally, happening to come across any pirate for myself is a death sentence. All I can do is say: "whelp, had a good run" and watch my ship sink and burn at the same time until an enemy boards and kills me in one shot.

Literally half an hour before I wrote this review, I had spent three hours in Safer Seas just messing around and getting back into the game. My computer is lower end so it took me ten minutes just to start the game. Then, in Safer Seas Rare punishes me with less than normal experience and gold from my loot. After three hours of sinking skeletons, raiding mermaid's hideouts, and plundering sea forts, I wanted to do a Gold Hoarder's vault voyage. I opened the voyage table only to realize, they change it's ui and I was reading through everything to understand it all. Less than two minutes of me parked at an island with nothing going on and three and a half hours worth of treasure piled on my sloop, my game crashes. All my progress, granted, a small amount of progress since it was Safer Seas and I was earning way less than I could have been, the application crashes. So, I didn't see a penny of my efforts. Cool. Rare doesn't like pve enjoyers, the game itself doesn't want me playing, and I wasted nearly four hours getting literally no where. Why do I even try?

In the conclusion of my time in the Sea of Thieves, I'll admit I really like certain aspects of the game, but it'll never be a "great" game in my eyes. The desirable experience of sailing in that beautiful art styled environment laced with epic battles of skeleton ships and seeking treasure is enjoyable for a while, but it's always soured by something the game puts on me (like crashing) or Rare puts on me (because they despise the idea of pve enjoyers enjoying the game the way they want to and place all kinds of hoops to force you to jump into High Seas and get railed by another player, because "it's funner for everyone" or something like that). I see myself hopping into Sea of Thieves despite my complaints, again, not because the game is great, but the hopes that one day, it might be good. I recommend people play this game if they enjoy pvp and want to grind while other players are constantly trying to seek the best way to put your vessel at the bottom of the ocean. Other players, turn back, for your pve, roleplaying, and friendly gestures mean nothing to both the player base and the company that makes the game.

Yes, this was practically a rant about my bad experiences, focusing solely on the negatives, but that's the way I think and thus the way people like me will really experience the game. The game is good, to a degree. The ideas for things to plunder and voyages to experience all while admiring the pretty environment paired with a fantastic ost, hanging out with your goofy mates, and doing anything you want (in High Seas) is fun, but I can normally not do it the way I want (without interruption from some toxic players in Safer Seas) without huge penalties or restrictions for virtually no reason other than playing differently than Rare wants, it normally takes hours to gain a decent haul to sell, the game's unstable and crashes every other session or has me literally teleporting every thirty seconds, and it genuinely takes anywhere from two minutes to fifteen minutes to get to whatever destinations you want to or are forced to head to (leading to a cycle of a minute or two of fun, then a few minutes of getting the loot back aboard your vessel, then finding the next destination, then waiting roughly ten minutes to get there all while doing mind numbing tasks to try and get there faster or to try and make the time fly by (if you can afford it), such as getting drunk for no reason, playing random shanties, firing random things at random things, and much much less (there's genuinely nothing to do but sit there and waste time while waiting to arrive at your next location, other than make sure your on course and sitting around, especially if you're a solo player)). There's much more I could write about, but who in the world is going to actually read this and actually care?

I hope the game is good one day and that Rare lets me play the way I want to (they gain nothing from restricting me, but they can do whatever they want to I guess)
(p.s. the game's definitely good if you're a positive person with friends. Lonely people, like myself, shouldn't play this game)
