Yes there is a reason. The age of this workshop item.

When this thing was created, Space engineers had only three kind of grid objects.
Small ships
Large ships
Stations (made out of large grid blocks)

Back then it wasn't possible to turn/rotate 'stations'.
They had a fixed orientation in space. Period.
So to I had to publish these grids as 'large ships'

Now in the large hangar there are many connected pistons and rotors.
Sadly these create a force feedback loop which which cause the hangar to start spinning.

Workaround:
Activate 'Unsupported stations' in the menu 'World settings'
Use a terminal on the main body of the large hangar and click on the button "Convert to Station"
Detach the hangar.

Is there a reason why anytime I detach the large hanger, it starts spinning uncontrollably and starts breaking everything...?

I'm not sure how to understand this question.
It uses exact the same grid size and port dimensions as the old modules. So I think you have to attach them the same style as the old one.
But maybe you should watch this video . Volgraza had made a quite good guide how to attach the modules to each other.
