This is the War of the Chosen version, the non-WotC compatible version is here:
[Non-WOTC] Shaken Scars are Back!

Shaken Scars are Back!

Yes, the little feature which slowly turned the naive rookies you started the game with into grizzled looking veterans by the end is back. See the Unfortunate Rk. Flores above, sporting one of the vicous scars from the Alien Hunters DLC after her brutal first mission.
Sadly, shaken soldiers gaining a random scar (if they weren't already scarred) disappeared with the patch which accompanied the release of "Anarchy's Children".
This loss was a bug not a conscious designed choice by Firaxis btw, since the code was still in place, but deffective due to a change elsewhere. In fact with War of the Chosen, they specifically still do a shaken check, even though "shaken" no longer exists in WotC, simply for the random scar! Still didn't fix the bug though. This is not linked at all to the new "shaken" status linked to the fatigue system. To the end user, it means some, but not all the time when a solider is gravely wounded.

The XComShakenScars.ini file can be edited to makes scars more frequent if preferred. Comments included in the file.

Special Thanks to the lovely Guadalupe FLores, who due to a fortuitously timed save became the repeated "crash test dummy" while working on this mod.

Other Mods by me
  • WOTC Compatible (non-WOTC versions also exist if appropriate)
    • Cinematic Rapid Fire, which gives Rapid Fire and Chain Shot their cinematic camera back which was removed in the patch ages ago. Also gives the Reaper Banish ability the same improved look.
    • Variant Power Armour Arms, which unlocks some variant Wraith and Warden armour arms parts which were hidden by Firaxis.
    • Less Overwatch Lock Ups!, which attempts to fix the visualization lockups during complex Overwatch/Reaction fire situations.
    • Better Armory Item Stats, which tweaks the stats display of weapons, utility items and upgrades in the Armoury, including displaying Critical Damage, Armor Pierce and Shred for all appropriate weapons.
    • Weapon Fixes, Which fixes a few issues with weapons and their upgrades, especially if you use mods which allow upgrades for (auto)pistols.
    • Chosen Info Controller Support, adds controller support for bringing up the Chosen Information Screen mid mission.
    • Peter's Grenades (and other TLP Fixes), which fixes some loadout, ability progression and UI issues with Legacy Operations.
    • Better Demolishing!, which gives range, weapon and upgrade based aim buffs to the 'Demolition' ability.
    • Better Grappling!, fixes issues with Grappling targeting in certain world geometry.
    • Trainable Sparks (and other Buffs) WotC was one step forward, two steps back for SPARKs. As well as allowing training, also gives them access to breakthroughs for their weapons, an ammo pocket (ammunition only utility slot), and some hack progression.
    • Train from Armoury allows normal soldiers to jump straight to training from the armoury, just as faction soldiers can. The Training Center is still required to be built first of course!
    • Ability Interaction Fixes, which fixes up "Death from Above" and "Serial" not proccing from second shot kills of "Chain Fire"/"Rapid Fire" and some other ability interaction issues.
    • Original High Hit Dodge Behaviour, which restores the pre-patch behaviour where Hit chance over 100 gradually eliminated dodge chance, not immediately made dodges impossible once Hit chance is 100 or more.
    • In conjuction wtih sebkulu,WOTC - Extended Information!, an enhanced, rewritten version of Perfect Information. Includes full list of enemy abilities as well as a stat list, as well as the classic features of the "shot bar" and stats in flyovers.
  • Non-WOTC Only

Agreeing with Dragon32 from a few years ago: this mod doesn't seem to honor the confi ini setting. It's putting scars on guys for just getting wounded.

Rookie came back from her first mission with only a katana and a pistol equipped, after round house slicing her first kill on an advent trooper his buddy blasted her down to 2 hp resulting in missing half her face thank to the Cyborg Scars. Now she has to wear a mask (RP) = Awesome Mod!!

Does this pull from the available scar list (including mod-added ones), or do they need to be whitelisted somewhere?

@Mr. Nice:
I seem to be getting scars on my troopers for any wound. I've set
SCAR_REASON=1

It's hard to diagnose but there seem to be many more scars than there should be.

Am I using the wrong format in the .ini so it's not being parsed? I originally had SCAR_REASON = 1 , but I doubt spaces would bork things.

That said I think I have been seeing too many scars throughout this campaign, regardless of what that's set to.

I had the same bug as CiXwOw, but due to computer breakdown, I completely forgot about XCOM.
Thank you both!

Personally, I like it when a lightly-wounded soldier comes back from the infirmary with half their face sutured up. It helps weed out the drama queens.

@Evangeline
When soldiers are gravely wounded there's a chance they'll get a scar cosmetic applied, they don't stack.
Shaken was a different thing in the base game to what it is in WotC but I don't remember the specifics. The scarring got bugged with the Alien Hunters DLC.

Good mod, I'm just a bit confused about how it works. I thought it would give them the scar while wounded and take it away once they are healed.

"the little feature which slowly turned the naive rookies you started the game with into grizzled looking veterans by the end" - does this mean they get more than one scar and they stack?

Also I think maybe changing to "gravely wounded" would be bettter. Shaken - I don't know what that even means anymore. Is it tied into the fatigue system now? Or does it mean the old "shaken" when you could get it from someone dying? Why would you get scars from your team mate dying though?

Oh wow! I wasn't sure if I'd get a response at all in 2020 let alone so quickly! That's awesome, thank you!
