Regarding crashes with Giant Earth map | Believe I found the core issue
TLDR; Lack of VRAM (GPU RAM) is what makes the game crash at late game at all instances (on the giant earth map) for me.

So, I decided to play on the giant map regardless of the warning, and everything was great until the late game. I started getting random crashes, but I felt there should be a more specific reason. So, here are the crashes I experienced:

1. Crash when loading the saved late game with the giant earth.
2. Random crashes right at the beginning of the turn.

The first crash I was able to replicate. It guided me to find the "criminal." First, I opened the performance tab on the task manager and observed my components' use. At first, everything seemed normal, but even then, the game crashed. Then I paid particular attention to the VRAM usage of my GPU. It was always bordering the limit (8 GB VRAM). Every time it hovered the limit, the game would crash on the loading screen. I replicated this loading screen crash multiple times by having other applications open.

The second kind of crash also happened when the VRAM usage hovered 100% or even spiked for a 10th of a second to 100%. The game would crash. I solved this again by lowering my graphics settings on the menu screen before going into the game.

In conclusion, all my crashes have been due to VRAM usage, and I have not found any other factors to blame. Every time the game has crashed has been because of a spike in VRAM usage or because the VRAM was already high.

Side note: I will be upgrading to an RTX 4080 next Saturday and will be able to test this hypothesis.

UPDATE: I just got the 4080 and tested it. VRAM is not the issue. Got to a point where crashes for whatever reason.

I was wondering if the "assets" available to the map had anything to do with it. Similar to issues with too many mods using up all assets and causing all the graphical issues.

I can play through the Giant Earth map until about turn 600. I turn off all sea level rise so have eliminated that as cause of crashing at that point. I am wondering if the map crashes then due to VRAM usage or what seem to be happening is that when number of cities settled reaches a certain number whatever that is the map then crashes. I love the giant Earth map but hate that I have to stop my game around turn 600 due to the crashes. I wonder if developer will ever release games code so this can be fixed by the modding community. They seem to have no desire to fix. Also, Mod---Warfare Expanded--- will crash startup unless you use the older Warfare Expanded Complete edition...

The cause of fatal crash is:

CIV 6 ENGINE has a HARDCODED ASSET LIMITATION.

When all the assets ingame (units, cities, districts, graphic elements) reach the magic number, the game begins to collapse and UNHANDLED_ACCESS_ERROR shows up. It's on FIRAXIS hands to fix this, and it's something they have introduced with Gathering Storm. GIANT EARTH worked fine before that update. You can watch this unfolding by enabling console commands and look for LUA section

My computer is also RTX4080.The same as you.I aslo got the issue.So it my not be a issue for equipments

Is the game more stable if we play, say R&F ruleset?

I love the Giant Earth map more that whatever new GS brings to the game

I want to start a massive game but don't want to wait till around turn 500 to find out I can't keep player. So was thinking of playing the less hardware demanding ruleset of R&F.

so this is still happening? I stopped playing civ6 for ages and was hoping this would be sorted but unless i'm mistaken there is still no solution?
