Character Overview - The Fox
The Fox is a long-ranged Hustler, relying on zoning out their opponents and carefully managing their unique resources to build and maintain momentum.

Unique Options
Rain
While the Fox much prefers to fight from the ground, sometimes taking to the skies is the only way to go. Whipping out an umbrella, the Fox leaps upward a short distance before gently gliding forward. The umbrella can strike foes above you, but this attack can also be used as a movement option, significantly reducing the Fox’s falling speed until they make another move and even applying a bit of upward thrust if the Fox has an Air Option to spare.

Specials
Spring
The Fox gestures, unleashing a surge of water from the ground. While certainly not the fastest poke in the game, the tall hitbox can cover both ground and air approaches simultaneously, covering one of the Fox's weaker areas. Watch for droplets on the ground to indicate where the geyser will spring up.

Wave
The Fox charges up water magic before unleashing it in a sudden torrent. This move has a long range and can’t be parried, allowing you to catch retreating foes or those approaching recklessly on the ground. You can also redirect the water mid-action, creating an Undertow that launches foes towards you or a Whirlpool that locks foes inside. Each follow-up has its own uses for combos, poking, and laying traps; pay close attention to the scenario, and use the move that works best for the situation!

Bubble
The Fox creates an aquatic prison by condensing water in the air. This move is rather slow, but allows the Fox to grab foes at a distance, stopping them in place momentarily. You can't hit the victim while they're trapped in the bubble; use the time the victim spends trapped to set up poetry slips and other tools before closing in. The bubble's massive hitbox can also be used to block projectiles, but will pop after a single hit.

Spray
With a flick of their wrist, the Fox hops backwards and throws a wave of bubbles forward that drift in the air momentarily before popping violently. This move comes out relatively quickly and covers a large area, but the bubbles take some time to actually detonate unless the opponent runs into them; use this move to limit the opponent’s movement options and force them to approach both quickly and carefully.

Poetry Slip
The Fox is a lover, not a fighter, but when the going gets rough they can use slips of poetry as makeshift talismans. The Fox throws a red poetry slip, which hangs in place after a brief delay. Poetry slips don't do much on their own, but enable some of the Fox's trickier maneuvers; hang them often and use them wisely. Keep in mind that you can only have 3 active slips at a time, and a slip that is too far away can’t be activated; place your slips carefully, and watch out for savvy opponents who may try to pull you away from your tools.

Moon Viewing creates a portal of moonlight, slingshotting the Fox towards their opponent in a flying kick. This move has invincible startup when used with Initiative, allowing the Fox to quickly reposition against overly aggressive foes.

Flower Viewing uses a bit of mystical trickery to snag the opponent in a storm of petals. This move requires a bit of start-up, especially during combos and/or against distant foes, but instantly drags the victim to the poetry slip's location, popping them into the air.

Transform
You may have noticed the cards on your HUD, just above the Super meter. These cards depict a boar, a deer, and a butterfly. These cards allow the Fox to transform into the animals they depict, allowing them to embody that animal for a brief time. Expended cards can only be regained by either performing a perfect parry or utilizing Koi-Koi (or Hustle, if you're feeling particularly gutsy).

Boar Form rushes along the ground, delivering powerful hits if it collides with the opponent. This is one of the Fox's strongest attacks in terms of raw damage, but is slow to start and can’t be canceled once it begins moving. A blocking opponent can even punish this move, provided they're willing to suffer a fair bit of chip damage to do so…

Deer Form leaps into the air, stomping on the opponent from above. This move normally throws the opponent to the ground on impact, but if timed well can actually be used to catch a landing opponent to extend combos. Keep in mind that the deer's jump arc is predictable and can’t be canceled out of, so a savvy opponent can try to smack you out of the sky.

Butterfly Form allows the Fox to quickly float out of the way of incoming attacks. This movement can be somewhat sluggish due to your small size, but the reduced hurtbox can allow you to slip past situations that would normally prove much more dangerous. Just be wary of follow-up attacks, as you're not invincible, and there is a bit of recovery time before you can cancel your movement.

Fox Form causes the Fox to hop through the air. This doesn’t require a card, but its only real upside is being slightly stronger and faster than a standard jump; use this mostly for repositioning while in the Transform stance.

Supers
Three Lights (Lv1)
The Fox releases a trio of revolving fireballs that hover in the air behind them. The flames don’t do much on their own, but the Fox can use their power to manipulate the flames freely, creating an aerial trap that can be remotely controlled. Use caution; taking a hit will cause the flames to dissipate.

Four Lights (Lv2)
The Fox surrounds themself in a ring of fire that steadily revolves around them. Each individual flame is small and doesn’t cover much, but opponents will need to take caution not to get themselves burned while attempting to get close. Keep in mind that it is possible to outrun the flames by moving too quickly; while this removes the protection that they would normally provide, you may be able to use this delayed movement to set up dangerous scenarios. Be warned that the shield will dissipate if you take damage, so be careful not to get too confident!

Five Lights (Lv3)
The Fox creates an arc of fox-fire over their head that lingers in the air momentarily. After a delay (which you can configure with the on-screen slider), the flames shoot off, peppering opponents with white-hot magic in the blink of an eye. Use these flames in combination with your other moves to create deadly scenarios and baffling mixups, but be careful; much like the rest of the Lights, the flames will fizzle out if you take a hit!

Koi-Koi (Lv2)
After connecting with any "Viewing" or "Lights" move, the golden mask on your HUD will light up. This is the indicator that you can activate Koi-Koi, possibly the Fox's most devious trick. In an instant, the Fox appears behind their opponent, ready to act immediately with just about any move available. This move is incredibly versatile; extend combos, dodge and punish attacks, or just put mental pressure on your opponent by holding them within a theoretical arm's reach at all times. Just be careful, as taking a hit will disable Koi-Koi, and you'll need to light up the mask again before you can use it.

Gameplay Tips
The Fox is a patient fighter, preferring to take their time and keep their distance in most engagements. Their attacks are slower than average, meaning you’ll need to find openings to strike rather than simply swinging wildly. Careful use of Transform allows you to juke around opponents, while moves like Wave and Spring allow you to limit your opponent’s options, possibly leading them into a trap.

As the Fox, combos are equally about laying on damage and setting up for future engagements. No combo lasts forever, so make the most of any opening you get; lay Poetry Slips, summon Lights, and place your foe on the back foot whenever you get the chance. Wave is particularly good for threatening foes you knock down thanks to its wide range and long duration, especially when used to make Whirlpools.

With Poetry Slips active, things get a bit more tricky. Moon Viewing allows you to punish foes that strike at you with a surprise attack from above, while more passive foes will find themselves quickly whisked away by Flower Viewing. Use the duality of these moves to commit mind-games on your foes, throwing yourself and foes around the arena and forcing them to guess whether they should be attacking where you are, or where you might be.
