Left 4 Dead 2

Left 4 Dead 2

Detour Ahead
Kyle's Review of "Detour Ahead" - 4/5
Highly challenging, occasionally confusing. 4/5 stars.

At first glance, Detour Ahead looks like Death Toll's cousin. The visuals are just as good, if not better. The Survivors are chatty, and there's even a custom NPC. However, it's a significant departure from standard Left 4 Dead under the surface.

Compared to official campaigns, there are a lot more zombie hordes and fewer supplies to deal with them -- there aren't even ammo piles in safe rooms! It's a very challenging campaign as a result, but I think it's still fair and balanced. Combined with the open environments and lack of direction, it almost feels like a survival game at times.

That lack of direction is the biggest flaw, though. I don't mind the campaign's intentionally high difficulty, but the poor navigation felt like an unintended obstacle. There are several points where the way forward is a small opening that's cloaked in shadows and hiding somewhere inside a maze. Ugh!

I do recommend this, but only to very skilled players.
