I had a dream last night.

I dreamt of a cool, windy night.
I stood upon the top of a small hill.
Gently rolling plains of lush hip length grass surrounded me, illuminated by a full moon so bright that subtle shades of colour still seemed to tickle at the edge of recognition.
The grass all across the plains swayed with the wind, seeming to dance in unison, hands outstretched to the starry night sky, marred only by a few lonely clouds.
A deep calm overcame me and I began to stroll.
I closed my eyes and breathed deeply of the crisp night air, memories and feelings rushing through me, transporting me back to carefree days before the world became so complicated.
The wind gently tousled my hair as I trailed my fingertips through the soft grass.
I strolled for hours, unsure of what this place was but not concerned about the details.
Things were simple and questioning such a gentle place somehow felt wrong.
The plains continued in every direction but after some time, a shape appeared in the distance.
Given no particular reason to go anywhere else, I turned toward the shape and continued walking.
As I approached the few lonely clouds in the sky found themselves company; friends carried in by gusting winds.
By the time I was close enough to make out the shape, the sky had filled with clouds.
It was a tree.
An ancient towering oak. Alone in an unbroken sea of swirling grass.
As the tree grew nearer, the clouds blocked out the moon and began to darken and thicken.
With little light and the wind picking up, this place didn't feel so gentle anymore.
The gusts whipped my hair back and forth and beat the grass around me flat.
The air began to fill with the metallic freshness that announced impending rain.
With only a hundred meters left to the old oak, the sky had turned black and seemed to be grumbling with discontent, small flashes periodically brightening the night.
A feeling of wrongness overcame me and I stopped dead.
I looked to the sky and an earsplitting crack split the night.
Heat and light became the whole world.
In that instant, time stopped.

Then a whisper.

So quiet I wasn't sure I'd heard it. Unable to move, I strained my ears.
"No...." The voice whispered again.
And at that, a set of hands grasped me by the shoulders and pulled me backwards through space and time.
I found myself back on that grassy hill I had started at an age ago, the wind gently lapping at the plains around me.
I turned around.

And Kevin Bacon stood before me.
He leaned forward and whispered "This place isn't for you. You shouldn't exist."
Seeing the confusion on my face, he gestured towards me.
I looked down and realised with a rising sense of horror that he was right.

I was an M4A1 with no front sight... But the sight hadn't been replaced by a low profile gas block!
I was an abomination. No wonder this place had tried to destroy me! I deserved to be destroyed!
I had lived only by the mercy of Kevin Bacon.
With no gas block to cycle my action, I was no better than a bolt action rifle! Worse even, a bolt action carbine! But who would want a 5.56 bolt action carbine with such an awkward bolt lever!?
I collapsed to the ground, howling dejectedly at the sky.
I woke in my bed, covered in sweat. And I knew what the dream meant...

I must make more AR15 platform skins...
