If you don't have a "SCR LOOT" addon you will only get vanilla loot!
YOU CAN ONLY USE ONE "SCR LOOT" ADDON AT A TIME
My current Favorite - SCR Loot - Industrial Overhaul & "Eat, Drink, Sleep. Repeat"

This mod removes all planet and moon unknown signals(special containers) and replaces them with my modified floating containers that work with the 3.0 water mod.

You will get normal vanilla space containers. You can use any other mod that changes space containers and it shouldn't affect my mod. (If you have issues put my mod above the other mod in the load order)

Designed around 1x cargo size but can work with more but might flip.

**Note:** Only Planet Special containers are modified, space special containers will have default loot.

Troubleshooting:
Unknown Signals can stall sometimes, seems to relate to saving/autosaving whilst an inactive container is awaiting clean up, but you should be able to reset them by editing the save file.

Saves can be found in %AppData%\SpaceEngineers\Saves\

Go into the relevant Sandbox.sbc save file

Find the <PlayerContainerData> entries

Set any <Active>false</Active> flags (in that section) to <Active>true</Active>

Looks like if you have the SCR Loot Eat Drink Sleep Repeat without this one, you (strangely?) get these containers planetside, but they will have only vanilla loot. Adding this mod fixes the issue.

So I was having the same problem with containers not spawning at all after adding this mod, and the solution with editing the save files definitely worked out. Thanks for that advice!

@ShaunTheKnife check your sandbox.sbc in your save file and search for PlayerContainerData
there will be one block for each player that played in your save, make sure that it says <Active>true</Active> if it says false replace the false with true
i found that this is my main issue with unknown signals not spawning on my server and this causes it. should be the same thing for singleplayer.

i installed this mod and had no containers spawn, now after removing it i am not getting containers in any of my worlds. any idea how to fix this?

@MAJ. Tom I have not had that issue. Is it repeatable? I am able to remove my entire mod list and my worlds will still load and only be missing the modded blocks.

Do not remove mod from list. It will mess up the entire file.
