Blasphemous has a remarkable atmosphere for a metroidvania game but it also comes with a price. I tend to have a decent tolerance when dealing with these sort of games but the grim ambience/theme that the game provides and coupled with the gameplay flaws actually makes it kinda depressing once you are starting to fail repeatedly.

The pixel art is where the game really shines, It's magnificent! The details in the animations and in the environments/backgrounds is just incredible!


If I can summarize the gameplay in one word, it would be BRUTAL! The kind of Brutal that is good and bad at the same time. Personally, I would've preferred a more fluid feel to the gameplay considering the amount of backtracking in a game where it's so easy to die & little to no indication of where to go. It is a souls-like game understandably and the dreadful ambience would have been affected too if there were any more changes but IMO it boils down to a kind of bad game design part.

I want to like this game, I really do. Unfortunately, the only thing it has going for it is the art and aesthetic.

The gameplay is, simply put, bland and boring. I'm only a few hours in, but I've encountered well over 15 different enemies and the counter is the exact same every time. Either stun-lock til death, or parry, hit once, twice, three times, repeat until dead. The platforming is janky, and not in a good way. I was constantly clipping into walls and falling when trying to grab ledges, then I would fall into a pit or spikes and need to run-back. The run-backs are LONG. Expect run-backs worse than Dark Souls 1. They are very boring due to the enemy design, so I found myself just running past everything. Despite running past 90% of enemies I encountered, I still had enough souls to purchase the upgrades the game gives you. There's more than enough souls, and non of the enemies are engaging, so what's the point of even fighting them.

This game could get really good, but I wouldn't know as the less than stellar first bit is enough to make me put the game down for good. The art style and story are phenomenal, but the gameplay is really lacking.

its a pretty solid metroidvania, although its a lil short if your not doing the DLC content.
