in that sense, could you have used this Goldsrc-style HL2 Freeman instead?
The cover art modification is based on the HL2 Iteration of Gordon, not only that, it's based on a piece of promo art for HL2 that has 2 noticeable differences from the "main" design of Freeman
1. The tops of the forearms aren't colored and they lack the grey bar that stops in the middle.
2. a much less noticeable difference that involves the front of the shins. there aren't grey bars going over the black part in the front of the shins.
I feel a much closer recreation of the cover art would use

As that model has a design for the variant of HL2 Freeman used in that promo art.
