this specific model was a infantry modification which was used pretty late in the germany offensive I think

It wasn't a prototype,they made thousands of these,but this isn't the most built version,this version wasn't actually build,it was a conversion to be able to be used by infantry

For those asking,this gun looks so weird because it was made specifically for emplacements,mainly for the Maginot line (They still have some there in museums),and also for tanks.You don't really need an ergonomic gun for a fortification,because you aren't holding the weight of the gun,and i believe this weird design was to make it more compact.
The magazine was meant to be reloaded by a designated loader on the side,and it's mounted there to allow for twin mounts,with each MG having a magazine on opposite sides.
It was supposed to be like that so that each gun could be fired individually to avoid overheating the other,sustaining a more efficient fire rate in terms of decay for the barrels.
In emergencies both could be fired at the same time,with an aproximate fire rate of 750 rpm
