Color Splash just feels like a slap in the face. It's *technically* a little better than Sticker Star, but the fact that they basically said "You know all those things everyone hated about the last game? Let's do them again and not try to fix anything" and patted themselves on the back for it makes it one of my most hated Nintendo games ever. It's like Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts; it's not a terrible game on its own, but the amount of wasted potential and complete lack of self-awareness from the developers is what makes it so frustrating.
SPM's gameplay was a bit weak compared to its predecessors (and the difficulty was a joke), but everything else made up for it. Memorable new characters with charming dialogue, great music, interesting visuals, and arguably one of the best stories of any Nintendo game. And though the gameplay could get bland at times, you can tell they were trying to be creative with the 3D flipping and multiple characters.
Super Paper Mario was really different, and sometimes kinda tedious, *cough* *cough* The block puzzle in the Cragnon World thing, the fruit trees in Chapter 7...
But it definitely had its high points.
Sticker Star is...a game.
Color Splash is where it started to get really bad. I did really like the graphics, it looked just like how I would have imagined a Paper Mario game when I played TTYD for the first time.
And that's where the good things end.
Paper Jam is the only good thing about Alpha Dream shutting down. But then again, Alpha Dream made one of the best RPG series I've ever played, just behind the MOTHER series, and Paper Mario not far behind.
My expectations are really low for Origami King, but hopefully it can recapture the charm from the first 3 games.
Paper Mario 64, Thousand Year Door, Super Paper Mario, Sticker Star, Color Splash. (And also Origami King, but this mod was released before that game was announced)
To be fair, Sticker Star and Color Splash suck anyway, so you got the 3 good Paper Mario games.
