The Maya believed that the jungle around them inhabited great spirits like the god Yum Caax, protector of plants and animals. Each city had a patron god who made the city prosper. The central temple was constructed as an invitation to a god to descend from the upper world. The legend says that each year, at the spring and autumn equinox, the great god Kukulcan descended from the sky down the staircase of his temple at Chichen Itza.
Other Mayan gods were Chac, the god of rain or Yaluk, the god of lightning. Sacrifices and sometimes even human sacrifices were made in the form of throwing them into a sacred cenote or in case of a human sacrifice on an altar on top of the main temple the victims heart was torn out. The Maya believed in three stages of existence:
The underworld, the middle world and a world above. A tree was the symbol for the link between these three stages.
