This was one of the better OFP games, in my opinion - despite it not being "that" old, it still requires a few tweaks in order for the Steam version to work as it used to.

If you're new to the game, welcome to the end of the classic era of gaming - everything you need to know to get the most fro this classic is included below.

If your GPU has less than 250mb vRAM or more than 2.5gb vRAM, the game caps the resolution.

This is annoying, as some of us have anywhere up to 16gb vRAM but still enjoy to play old games.

It is possible to fix by changing the steam OFDR.exe,

(x:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising\ODFR.exe)

to unoffical, OFDR.exe, made by acidxchrist, that is designed for the steam version (v1.02), and allows all the old mods to work with the game and puts back all the stuff Codemasters took out - not simply increase the resolution aspect.

The game has a V1.03 patch (beta) that can be downloaded from here:

This patch says it also restores mod support, however there is no mention of if it fixes the resolution issues (if not, you can play with some settings - look at the wiki and click the widescreen fixer links) and I cannot try it out at the moment.

If, as MrDefuseDaBomb, you are experiencing sound issues with OFP games (ty for pointing that out), it is because you have fancy sound set-ups.

eg, sound plays in intro, not in game

The fix is simple but requires altering settings before and after playing, as it's switching the Windows sound preferences to those that the game will handle..:

Change you sound preferences to be "stereo" rather than "5.1+ surround" in your OS' preferences and (if required) in game.

• From the desktop, right-click your taskbar’s Speaker icon and choose Playback Devices.
  
• Click your speaker or speaker’s icon and then click the Configure button.
  
• Click the Test button, adjust your speaker’s settings, and click Next.
  
• Click the tabs for any other sound devices you want to adjust. When you’re through adjusting, click the OK button.

• Also, may help to follow the below steps to enhance the audio output quality.
  
• Right click on Sound icon from the Notification Panel in task bar and open Playback devices
  
• Choose your current playback device
  
• Navigate to Properties and click on Advanced
  
• Choose lower or higher bitrate (depends on game, lower for OFP).

If the problem is still not fixed and you experience sound issues, please post in the guide and I will point you to some old Codemasters troubleshooting docs and perhaps 3rd party apps that may help.

Remember - the game is DX9c.

It is possible to skip the intro videos by simply creating text files for:

..\ego_sting.bik
..\intel_sting.bik

that are found in:
Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising\data\media\ui\

and changing the extension of each .bik to .bak and then the corresponding .txt to .bik.

This ought to ensure no start-up crashes, that may occour by deleting the splash/intro bik files.

Press enter to access the menu (if it says X and you have no controller, this is the button).

In Keyboard Settings (down arrow and enter) > Advanced (F1) there is an option to disallow the use of the gamepad (down, left or right arrows to change and enter).

Even if unplugged, the game will default showing only the buttons used by the controller, and - wtf plays FPS or military sims with the controller?

Apart from for the driving or "autorun by wrapping the cable around the stick so it's always up" in Arma2 DayZ..? Or flying a drone/heli.

^^ Here's a bunch of other VPN/vLAN services for running LAN games over the internet, which is the only way to play, since multiplayer support was closed in OFP:DR.

Installation for the mission updater is manual, so run the updater / install the missions in the game directory.

Missions and mods are placed in: data_win\missions

So long as you have the updated .exe, created by acidxchrist as mentioned above.

Once this is complete, Tunngle is running and you have joined the OFP:DR network - the "servers" can be found in "Mulitplayer > LAN > Server Browser".

Finally, you might join the last bastion of OFP:DR online, that has been a bit of a ghost town for a while, but... you know...:
