Unlocking the game after completion
By MaraviaX
I have seen a number of people express displeasure over the game locking itself after completion of the Epilouge. While I think it is a fitting ending, I also can see peoples frustration over being excluded from some achievements if they did not do things in a specific order. I was one of them, but luckily, the author has informed us of a way to "unlock" the novel for subsequent playthroughs.

Assumptions
I've made the following assumptions based on what I perceived to be the most likely configuration used by readers.
  • The reader is using Windows as their operating system.
  • The reader is using Windows 7 or higher.
  • The reader is using a 64-bit version of that version of Windows.

The release notes state this visual novel also runs on MacOS and Linux, however I do not have a Mac currently on which I can test. I've also assumed an individual using Linux would (or at least should) not need to be given a walkthrough.

Since this guide was thrown together rather quickly, I may circle back in the future and expand the instruction and scripts to handle things such as Windows XP, 32 bit installations, and write shell scripts to achieve the same in MacOS and Linux if there is enough interest.
How to do it myself
If you'd like to do this on your own, the easiest method is to do the following.
  • Go to %appdata%\RenPy\LilyoftheValleyRemake-1400588753
  • Delete the file called 'persistent'
  • Do the same in your steam install directory. By default it should be C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Lily of the Valley\game\saves, however may be different if you changed your install path.
  • The #1 easiest way to find it, is to locate the game in your Steam screen
  • Right click and select Properties
  • Select the Local Files Tab
  • Click on Browse Local Files
  • Navigate to game/saves and delete the persistent file.
Do it for me
For those who like to have things done for them, I have created the following "fix". All it is is a simple batch script that will make your game playable again. Update: I have now included a second script to achieve the first section of this guide for you, if thats the result you desire.

For standard Steam installs, it should work out of the box. If you have routed your game installs elsewhere, you can edit the script to point to your installer location. I've made the assumption those who know how to change their installation path can change a batch script. Read the readme.txt.

What does it do?
It either takes a copy of a persistent file that has been crafted to be in a state just after unlocking the Epilouge and places it where it needs to go, or removes them completely. This will allow you to get the Intermission achievement if you missed it. The Authors note achievement can be reached even in a locked state.

Contents of fix.zip
  • clean.bat - file to return the game to a fresh, unplayed state.
  • fix.bat - file to run to unlock the story again, leaving it in a state of having just unlocked the Epilouge.
  • persistentfix - As stated above, it is the persistent file from gameplay up to a certain point. This was done to ensure people didnt have a reason to complain about having to go through the whole story again just to read the intermission.
  • readme.txt - A file that gives information about the scripts.

Well, it has been nearly 4 years since this was posted initially. Originally, you got to play through this once, with the inability to start again as a statement to the finality of the story. If I recall, ebi faced some backlash for that and I think she pushed out an update that took that particular feature out.

Since when does the game lock itself? It doesn't happen either on Linux or through Wine it seems. I can play just fine after finishing the game.
