Quick Info Section
You can find the launch options in:
Team Fortress 2 > Properties > Launch Options

You can find your TF2 Folders in (usually):
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common

You can verify your game files by:
Team Fortress 2 > Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Local Game Cache
Gameplay Issues
  • TF2 is running in "Insecure mode"
this seems to be a serious and wide-happening issue when the update at April 2017 happened, so here's the fix (Disclaimer : pretty complicated) :
    1. Disable Steam Cloud
Team Fortress 2 > Properties > Updates > Steam Cloud
    2. Exit steam
    3. Delete config.cfg file located in "Steam\userdata\*number*\440\remote\cfg"
    4. Delete your TF2 folder
Steam > Steamapps > Common > Team Fortress 2 > Delete the "tf" folder
    5. Verify game cache
      https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=853378539
    6. Defrag game cache
    7. Run regedit and delete this key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Source\tf
    8. Run the game and disable multicore rendering
Settings > Video > Advanced > Multicore Rendering
  • "My PC is way above the recommendations list listed on the Store Page, why is my FPS so low?"
    the list is very outdated
you need atleast 4 GB of ram and a decent CPU and GPU to get good fps in this highly unoptimized piece of crap of a game

  • "Server is using different class tables" / "Server is using a different version"
    go to
    Team Fortress 2 > Properties > Betas
    and select "previous version"

  • An error has occurred whilst updating Team Fortress 2 (Content File Locked) (Windows OS)
this is the fix (will update later) :
    https://steamproxy.net/discussions/forum/1/348292957934471548/#c348293122110878751

  • Cannot leave party / Stuck in party
This is currently (as of now, 17/12/17) a bug on Valve's end.
The fix for this is to log-out from steam, and logging back in.
It's advised to Not play any parties for now due to this
3/28/18 Type tf_party_leave in your console.

  • Crashes for mac devices
    Fix:
    1. Go on steam
    2. Right click TF2
    3. Properties -> Local Files -> Browse Local Files
    4. Right Click TF2 (You won't have to do this if it already redirects you to the main folder) , "Show Package contents" (You won't have to do this if it already redirects you to the main folder)
    5. Go to tf -> cfg
    6. Copy config.cfg
    7. Open it with TextEdit (Select an application to open it with if it says no application is set to open it)
    8. Delete everything
    9. type "cl_forcepreload 1" (without the "")
      * You don't have to do this, only do it if cl_forcepreload 1 doesn't work.
    10. Save, close.

    another solution:
    1. Go on steam
    2. Right click TF2
    3. Properties -> Local Files -> Browse Local Files
    4. Right Click TF2 (You won't have to do this if it already redirects you to the main folder), "Show Package contents" (You won't have to do this if it already redirects you to the main folder), Select hl2_osx
    5. CMD + I (not L)
    6. Under General, find "Locked"
    7. Check it
Note: This can cause issues when the game recieves an update*

  • Content file locked (macOS)
    Fix:
    1. Go on steam
    2. Right click TF2
    3. Properties -> Local Files -> Browse Local Files
    4. Right Click TF2 (You won't have to do this if it already redirects you to the main folder), "Show Package contents" (You won't have to do this if it already redirects you to the main folder), Rename/Delete hl2_osx
    5. Try installing the update

If it doesn't work, go to:
    • ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/downloading and delete the hl2_osx in there.
(This might not work, the directory might be incorrect).

  • "Help! When i use Launch Options or Config files the Screen is Completely White in game"
The problem is Transparent Viewmodels, Either turn them off or delete your HUD Files.

  • "Missing File Privileges" error when updating / installing
    Launch steam as administrator

  • Invisible players, floating objects, enemy in team colors
    Type in console
    record fix; stop;

  • Crashes On Mac Devices
not many fixes about this, most likely because tf2 isn't really meant for macs

  • I can't see my halloween footprints
You might have a corrupted or damaged vpk that contains those particles, that or you probably had them overwritten by someone, I suggest verifying your game cache and looking into what mods you have installed.

  • Game crashed when trying to load map
This is a rare issue that appears to affect systems with memory pools lower than the standard, it's recommended to play TF2 with at least 4GB of RAM available

  • Game crashes when changing level

This is mainly down to a memory allocation issue, overtime, TF2 consumes memory and eventually becomes more unstable, in order to prolong the life of your client, try to lower your graphics settings along with deleting temp files within your TF folder.

  • Game crashes when spawning

This is basically due to either a conflicting mod that you have installed OR that one of the models in the games main files has become corrupted, it is recommended to verify your game cache in order to solve it

  • Out Of Memory Crashes
    Some fixes:
    • temporary fix

    • Delete your tf folder in your Team Fortress 2 folder. Then verify your game cache.

  • Engine-Related Error
This is an engine error, which means the only way to fix it is by reinstalling tf2 completely or verify your game cache to check if any "key" files are gone or corrupted.
And if that doesn't work, then you're (basically) screwed, since there is no other fix for this (that i know of)

  • TF2 Won't Start / Crash On Startup
    Either:
  • "No Steam HTTP interfaceCannot init steam datagram client, no Steam HTTP interface not currently connected to the TF game coordinator service. Please try again in few minutes"
Aka: TF2 isn't connected to the game coordinator service (valve servers)
Restart your steam and your connection

  • Disappearing Mouse on Menus Error
Use the command on the console:
    cl_software_cursor 1

  • TF2 Download Stuck At 100%
    Go to:
    Steam > Steamapps > downloading
then find the folder with hl2.exe
Delete that folder, and restart steam

  • Can't See Any Sprays
    Go to your launch options
Team Fortress 2 > Properties > Launch Options
    And put in
    -cl_playerspraydisable 0 -r_spray_lifetime 2 -r_decals 128 -mp_decals 128

  • Black Screen On Windows Button Press
    Go to launch options
Team Fortress 2 > Properties > Launch Options
    Type in
    -sw -noborder

  • Cant Change Resolution In-Game / Crashing When Changing Resolution
Change it manually via launch options
Team Fortress 2 > Properties > Launch Options
    Put in:
    -w * -h **
Replace * with your monitor width
Replace ** with your monitor height

    Example
    -w 1920 -h 1080

  • Loud Sound And/Or Static
    Type in
    snd_restart
    in console

  • Crashes After Updating TF2
Expect some crashes since anything added is considered "new" and would be "unstable" at that time, just wait for a fix

  • Cannot Play Competitive Or Casual (Not Connected To Game Coordinator)
    Restart steam and your connection

  • Item / Loadout Server Unreachable
Item server is temporarily unavaible, this can't be fixed and you just need to wait till the servers are back up

  • Frequent Crashes While Playing
    Try:
    • Verifying your game cache
      And/or
    • Check for outdated and/or incompatible mods and delete and/or replace or update them
Keyboard/ Mouse fixes or issues
When i chat, my <insertkeyhere> isn't working. How do i fix this?
Simply do alt+tab to go to steam then go back. This fixes most keyboard problems.
If not, press ESC and the navigate your way to the options menu, and click on "Reset to Default" or "Default Settings" and you should be good to go.

I can't move!
Options > Keyboard.
Are your keys unbinded? Did someone tell you to unbindall? Well you just got rick roll'd. Try resetting to your default settings.

HOLY MOTHER I AM SPINNING AROUND IN CIRCLES WHAT DO I DO
Again, this is happening due to a crash. Open task manager or alt+tab your way outta there.

Sensitivity Problems

Options > Mouse.
Adjust your sensitivity to the point where you're comfortable with it.
FPS / Graphical Issues
  • Serious FPS Drop / Lag
this Reddit Thread has the fix

  • Main Menu Has Black Background
    Disable discord overlay

  • Lag When Looking At Players
    Go to advanced settings and
target id - disable floating health bars

  • Missing Files / Glitched Textures
This is pretty easy to fix
    https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=853378539

  • Lighting / Coloring Issues
type these in console, or your launch options
Team Fortress 2 > Properties > Launch options
    Command:
    mat_phong 0 & mat_specular 0
if it's in launch options then
    -mat_phong 0 -mat_specular 0

Note: some props and items will "look weird" with these two settings
Guide on the changes : http://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=287071615
    mat_phong 0 fix pack : http://gamebanana.com/skins/138140

  • Screen Tearing
Adjust your resolution and turn v-sync on

  • variant config line for the launch options the game minimizing

    -w 1920 -h 1080 -novid -windowed -noborder

mostly you should just need -windowed -noborder

  • FPS Lag
    Here's some common fixes
    • Try switching between mat_phong 0 and 1

    • Reduce your graphic settings (in-game settings>video>advanced settings. note: make sure you adjust them outside of a game)

    • Reduce your resolution and/or resolution (in-game settings>video)

    • (FOR LAPTOPS) Adjust your power management controls to be set on "high performance". Note: it's best to keep your laptop plugged in while doing this since this drains your battery pretty quickly

    • Run TF2 In DX 8 mode
(If you're stuck in lvl 8, put -dxlevel 91 to go the good version :D)
    • Use TF2 FPS configs, these are completly "legal" to use and will improve your fps
      Heres some good ones:
    • There is a way to increase FPS without tweaking the in-game settings. You need to tweak your antivirus though.

      Credit goes to this thread.

First, look up whatever antivirus you use on the internet.Look up how to block the antivirus from scanning certain files you choose. Then, locate that place in your antivirus and block the following directory:
      C:\Program Files (x86) or Program Files\Steam\appcache\stats

Block the antivirus from scanning that folder
Connection Based Issues
  • Internet / Ping Lag
    • Check for and/or stop/pause any active downloads in your device and/or in any other devices that is connected to your network

    • Use a wired connection if possible

    • Set steam to pause all downloads while ingame

    • Try restarting your conection and/or modem/router

    • Check the location of the server that you're playing on to see if the lag is because of the distance between your device and the server

    • Try youtube videos, explaining cl_interp and cl_cmdrate to help figure out what settings you should have.

  • Cannot Trade / Trade Error
This is either because of the TF2 Steam API being down or because the settings on you're account doesn't allow you to trade (Note: if you're a f2p in tf2 you cannot trade)

  • Community Market Not Responding
Steam API is down, until it's up again the market doesn't work

No Hats mod (Some people said this mod doesn't increase Fps. but i'm not sure)
Oldschool pack (Makes your graphics like Nintendo 64)
Clean TF2 (I'm not sure if this can increase your FPS, but makes the textures flat. Also, this mod can be use as a cheat in Slender Fortress server)
DanPixed's MaxFPS (Makes your graphics look more pixelated)

    Screen Resolutions
This has something to do with FPS, but it doesn't matter if you have a better laptop or a better computer. I'm doing the Aspect Ratio, so i don't list the resolutions but they're together inside them.

    4:3 Low Fov, Highest FPS
    16:10 Middleground for both
    16:9 High Fov, Lowest FPS

Which Hud has the most FPS?
Well, Huds doesn't do with FPS, but there's one that has to do with FPS.
    My answer is: Ray's Hud

Solution: you have the transparent viewmodels mod. Remove the mod from your custom folder, directory being "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf\custom".

    Again , switch to Dx9

Help! Australium weapons looks like they're covered in cheese!
mat_phong 0 , removes the greyish shine on your character , but it also makes australium look completely gold , there's a fix pack but I don't think it's updated

I suggest adding some kinda note or idk to the "main menu background is black" that says to check ANY applications or programms that create overlays. I had the same problem but for me Razor Cortex was the one causing the issue.
Dewa  [author] 13 Aug, 2022 @ 3:39am
That's either a connection issue from your end or that particular server is having issues on its own
FBI 12 Aug, 2022 @ 1:45pm
I did not find article about "Connection failed after 4 retries" so could you help me with that?
Magenta Lizard 10 Aug, 2020 @ 2:36pm
I have no idea.
3 hours of mind numbing bullhonkey of files simply not working when i do everything right has fried my brain.
Dewa  [author] 9 Aug, 2020 @ 6:59pm
Aren't transparent viewmodels a mod? They won't work if you aren't in a community server, iirc
Magenta Lizard 8 Aug, 2020 @ 7:23pm
I ended up fixing it eventually. Now my only issue is that transparent viewmodels don't work no matter what.

I tried to fix that for 3 hours so i'm not gonna try it again.
Dewa  [author] 8 Aug, 2020 @ 7:05pm
You sure verifying hasn't helped?
Magenta Lizard 8 Aug, 2020 @ 1:52pm
I'm having the same problem as bro012 and mega links don't work anymore. Can you please send it through something else?
Dewa  [author] 18 Jul, 2020 @ 7:21pm
do you have any custom HUD mods installed? or any config that might have disabled it? (it can be toggled via commands, just put cl_hud_minmode 1 in your launch options, or put 0 to disable it)
