There are only 3 acceptable nations:

Ukraine
Prussia
Denmark

If you pick another nation you may as well surrender in minute 1

Economics:

MINE STONE

It is a well known fact that throughout the 17th and 18th century the nations of the world had a stone-based economy where nations that can mine the most stone would gain domination.

Combat:

If you are ukraine, spam serdiuks and sich cossacks. Sell stone to upgrade them.

If you are denmark or Prussia, spam musketeers and HUSSARS. Sell stone to upgrade them.

This is 100% historically accurate, this is how Frederick the great won his wars, sell stone to upgrade hussars and rush the enemy city and burn ABSOLUTLEY EVERYTHING.

If you really want to enjoy a game with any other nation, you have to reduce the effectiveness of the AI' "horde-spamming". The only way I have been able to achieve this more-or-less consistently (in a Random skirmish-type of game) is to use the 'Peninsulas' map-type and build a strong navy. Then, after destroying the enemy fleet and its harbours and any mines you can reach with bomb-vessels, you can then concentrate on building a balanced army and use combined-force tactics in the more authentic way. I find that makes for a more satisfying game. To my mind it is a pity that the AI is just a "spamming machine" and not more realistic. Just saying...

Hussars will get through any nation AI. This tactic works on very hard. So far I haven't tried this tactic with ever country. Prussia certainly has the best Hussars that i used this tactic with.
