The Hat Glitch
By Foobie
Have you ever seen a pootis bird wearing a hat, but soon after aquiring a Chicken Kiev yourself, find it impossible to put hats on? Look no further, for it is possible to equip hats with the head replacements.

NOTE: I will likely not be replying to comments any further as they all seem to be the same questions. I'll be occasionally updating the contents as time goes on just in case anything changes.

What the glitch is
The 'Hat Glitch' is an exploit that allows you to equip multiple conflicting hats on a single loadout. It allows for cosmetic sets like the banana Chicken Kiev combo seen in the image for the guide. This guide will take you step by step on how to do this.
If Valve patches this exploit, there will be a lot of sad people as well as this guide becoming useless.

But first, you need to enable something very important, which that thing is the developer console. You MUST have it enabled in order to do this exploit.

Go to options, and click on advanced options. You will see this little menu appear, make sure "Developer console" is checked. You can close out of the menu after doing so.

The Exploit - Step by Step on how to do it
After making sure the developer console is enabled and you actually have the cosmetics, we can now begin!
All whole head cosmetics work with this exploit, so any that do not take up the entire head equip region WILL NOT WORK. Make sure you have a whole head cosmetic you wish to use this with!

YOU WILL NEED TO BE IN A GAME TO DO THE EXPLOIT WITH THIS METHOD.

Now with that out of the way, the first thing you will want to do is empty a loadout. The weapons, action slot, and taunts do not matter, only the cosmetics. Put the whole head cosmetic you wish to glitch with another in the bottom-most cosmetic slot, like so:

Next, open the console. Type +quickswitch into it and press enter.

What will happen is when you go back in game, you should and will see a small menu titled "Quickswitch". Press 6 and find the hat you want to glitch onto your loadout. You will then click on it until it says "Equipped" by it. If the original hat is the whole head cosmetic, and the one you want to glitch isn't also a whole head cosmetic, you will see the hat on your loadout despite the conflicted regions.

After you've done this in quickswitch, open the console and type -quickswitch into and press enter, just like the first step but with a - instead of +. It will close the small menu that is invading your vision when you try to play. Once you do this, if you open the loadout you wanted to glitch two hats on, you should see that both hats are equipped despite their restrictions. You can use the third, open slot to put in any other cosmetics without any negative, as seen in the screenshot.

Still have questions? Ninja Cookie made a video on this exploit, and does this exploit equipping two hats instead of a whole head + hat. While hat + hat isn't permanent unlike whole head + hat, it is still something you can refer to.

Use TF2 Wiki to see if your hat is whole head, and therefor, be permanent when glitched! Keep in mind that if you want to use anything other than Whole Head + something else, you will need to use Ninja Cookie's video featuring two methods to do this.

Congratulations!
You just learned how to do perhaps the easiest exploit, woo!

This exploit works on every single server as long as it has cosmetics enabled. Seriously, what kind of server wouldn't allow cosmetics.

This glitch is permanent as long as you don't decide to change out one of the glitched hats, then the loadout will be a normal loadout again and restrictions will apply unless you do the glitch once more. You can change out the hat normally.

Is it not working? Every step is listed in the guide, and if this is patched, I will change the title and first section. It is most likely because you didn't read it and do it step by step. Surprisingly, *looks at people in comments*, a lot of people didn't read it carefully and did what the guide said step by step. I doubt I will be answering anymore questions, as they are already answered in the guide and I might as well make an FAQ since I'm getting the same questions.

Credit for this guide being made would have to go to my friend, Pock3ts, whom had no idea how to do this glitch and simply me telling him didn't help. So, enjoy this guide dedicated to you.

This guide shouldn't be taken down at any point, even if this exploit is patched and everyone becomes angry at Valve for patching it. Seriously Valve, if you ever read this, don't fix this exploit. This exploit is harmless and the best thing ever. Who doesn't like nightmare fuel loadouts that clip everywhere?

Edit:
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. What was a simple tutorial for a glitch to put hats on the whole head items became the currently most popular steam guide. Thank you, viewer, for clicking on this guide and reading its content, and giving it a rating, hopefully. Hopefully Valve takes the attention the guide is getting as a sign this shouldn't be patched.
F.A.Q.
Frequently Asked Questions

Q: It doesn't work?
A: Yes, it does. As long as you do it step by step, following the requirements for hats needed for this to work, it will. Simply saying 'it doesnt work' won't allow people to help you, either.

Q: +quickswitch doesn't show up?
A: This can be numerous things. Type +quickswitch a few more times, custom HUDs may hide it, as well as you have to be in a game of TF2. Casual, idle, x10, Slender Fortress, anything. Just type +quickswitch while in a game, not on the main menu, and go back into the game, the menu will appear on the bottom of the screen if you are not using a special HUD. I hope you read the capitalized, underlined text at the start of the step by step section, it says you have to be IN A GAME.

Q: How to open console?
A: Follow the step to enable the console in the guide and press ~ in game.

Q: It doesn't work with x hat.
A: This will not work with any hats that are not Whole Head in that third cosmetic slot in the loadout screen. Replace the Sir Shootsalot that is in the screenshot with a Whole Head cosmetic and this WILL work. Use the TF2 wiki, link provide in the Congratulations section, to see if the hat is Whole Head. Many pyro ones are not, as well as the Horrific Head of Hare, are not whole head.

Q: Quickswitch shows only weapons?
A: As stated in the guide, you press 6 to change to the cosmetic tab, and find the cosmetic you want to glitch onto the whole head hat.

Q: Does this work with non-whole head hats?
A: Using the simple version listed in the guide without timing and button presses, no. Use Ninja Cookie's video I provided for hat + hat, just keep in mind hat + hat is NOT permanent.
(EDIT: I decided to type it out just in case. You achieve hat + hat by the same method as this guide, but instead of simply closing quickswitch, you need to equip the second, merged hat and quickly touch a resupply locker or respawn. The server will quickly take the merged hat out of the loadout if you don't respawn or resupply, thus rendering the merge useless. The merge will only be in effect for as long as you are alive as well, being temporary and NOT permanent.)

Q: How to unequip?
A: Go back and read the contents, as this is a part of the guide. You unequip a glitched hat like you would normally with a non-glitched hat. You simply click on the slot, and click the "empty" option that appears alongside all possible hats that you can equip.

Q: Quickswitch won't close! HELP!
A: Type -quickswitch into the console. This is a part of the guide, please don't skim through it.

Q. Pressing 6 in quickswitch doesn't do anything?
A. This is likely due to you rebinding 6, or unbinding it. Type into the console the following phrase without the <>: <bind 6 "slot6"> and pushing 6 will now work.

Q. Is this patched?
A. Just like "it doesn't work", no, it has not been patched and I highly doubt it will. After all, this is a cosmetic bug using quickswitch and harms no one. This has not been patched and if it was, I will update the title of the guide to say. After all, I use this bug myself.
As of July 28th, 2019, it is still not patched. It basically just lets you get hats on the halloween head replacements so I don't see why it ever will be removed.

Update as of July 28th, 2019:
Q. Why does this whole head hat not work with the bug?
A. I've noticed a large number of the new workshop hats have incorrect wiki pages with equip regions, that or they are added in incorrectly and simply do not work with the bug at all. Some notable examples include the Trucker's Topper (labeled as whole head) and the Coldfront Commander (simply doesn't work). If you can get specific hats from the newer collections to work, then that is great! However, I cannot help much should something be incorrect. Valve has grown lazy with coding and updating TF2, if the "Crate Depression" wasn't obvious enough of this. If you want to test a hat to see if it is whole head, I highly advise to try to put on a misc item like a pair of glasses. Don't do the had combination bug for it, just try to put it on like you would normally. If you can put the misc on, the hat is not whole head. If you can't, it probably is whole head. Do note what hats lack an equip region so you do not mix them up with a facial misc cosmetic. Goodluck with the bug as always!

Thanks for reading the guide. I hope this helps you make your loadouts look even more ridiculous than ever before!

Update: Suddenly it works for some reason, but now when i press 6 it just says at the bottom "(Equipped) Empty" and any item I equip empties the third slot and puts the new hat in the first. Pretty sure it doesn't work anymore.

When I press 6, nothing happens. Probably because I changed my controls around over 10 years ago. What is 6 supposed to be bound to?
