Hints - General
Days of the Week
The world in Atelier Sophie runs on a 5 day week consisting of Sprout, Bud, Flower, Fruit and Seed. Fruit and Seed are the weekend.

Material Rumors
When you buy a material rumor go asap to the location mentioned in it. The rumors are limited time and will be a large waste of money if you don't get the materials. Don't worry about not being able to purchase every material rumor, they do repeat eventually but are random.
Btw for the most part they just provide better quality materials of the type sometimes with specific traits like Size+. However a few material rumors allow access to otherwise unavailable materials.

Events
Some events can only occur during certain times of the week.
Eg. Tess is only available during weekends (Fruit and Seed).
People also move around the town of Kirchen Bell over the course of a day and have different schedules on different days and certain events can only be triggered in certain areas.
Eg. Elise has an event that occurs in the forest behind your house but only after a few previous ones are completed.
Events are semi time gated. You can only trigger one character event with a specific character each day.
Every named character has events, talk to them whenever you are free and especially if they are in a place that is different from the norm.

Enemies
Certain enemies only appear during specific times of the day. Like the Ghosts in Chick Woods (the first area) only appear at Night. Some monsters also only appear during certain weather events like Rain.

Material Spots
Much like enemies can change depending on the time of day and weather.

Quests
Quests like Material Rumors sometimes have limited durations. Limited duration quests are not required to progress specifically. Again like Rumors they are random and repeatable if you get the same one again.
Hints - Alchemy
Aaah Alchemy. The bread and butter of the Atelier series.
Sophie makes a slight departure from the old system and tries out a simple puzzle like system of performing alchemy.
Alchemy is used to advance the plot, produce powerful consumable items and even make money by selling valuable products of high quality.

Later on you'll get to choose once you have more but at the start all you have is Grandma's Cauldron.

On the left we have the selected materials for use.
Size is what shape the material will occupy on the grid.
On each material there is a number. This number is the value of the material for the category it was chosen. Two pieces Magic Grass were chosen for this recipe the other is currently being held.
The number on the material determines how much it adds to the effect on that slot of item being crafted. In this case the effect is "HP Recovery XS".
Two Magic Grass with a value of 10 = 20 the number shown on the right.
When the number on the right goes up to the bar at a value of 50 in this case, the effect changes and usually becomes more powerful.

At the top of the grid there are 5 coloured orbs.
The percentage number next to these adds bonus value to effects of the same colour.
The colour of the number on the material which is the same as that displayed in the top right corner of the large portrait of the material determines which orb it adds percentage to.
Choosing and placing many materials of the same colour is a great way to increase a specific colour's potency.

The 'stars' on the grid provide bonus value to the effect of the material placed upon it.
Placing materials on the grid also produce additional 'stars' around them.
The stars can stack up to 3, which appear larger.
Placing the material you want the greatest effect for last is thus ideal.

Quality is determined by the material quality used and how much of the board is covered by materials. A fully covered board provides a large bonus to the quality of the product.
Use Count shows how many times a consumable item can be used before it is finished.
Size on the right, like for the materials on the left, determines what shape the product will occupy on the grid if it is used in any further recipes.

Materials can be placed on top of one another however it is not advised to do so unless it is not possible to avoid. You lose the colour percentage gained by the material 'pushed down'.

Starting at with 1 at alchemy level 10, 2 at 20 and 3 at 30, you can transfer a traits from the materials to the product.
Certain traits can be combined to produce stronger traits. And free up trait transfer points for other products further down the chain.
Hints - Combat

At the start of combat you get a rough indication of what the enemies will do during their turn.
  • Attack (The enemy will perform a regular attack)
  • Warning! (The enemy will perform a powerful attack)
  • Break (The enemy won't attack this turn) (Needs to be hit a few times first)

You then get to decide what each of your party members will do that turn.
  • Attack (Perform a regular physical attack against the targetted enemy)
  • Item (Choose a currently equipped consumable item to use)
  • Skill (Use one of the character's skills at a cost of skill points)
  • Guard (Receive reduced damage for that turn)
  • Flee (Try to escape from the battle)
Each character can also choose between Aggressive and Defensive stance.
What these do is determined by your Chain Counter
When the Chain Counter reaches 100%, characters may perform additional attacks if they are in the aggressive stance.
Characters in defensive stance will try to protect other characters at 100% Chain Counter.
At the start this will then reset to 0%.
However later it will be changed such that it doesn't reset at 100% and continues up to 200%.
At 200% characters in the same stance will perform a much more powerful combination attack or defense depending on the stance.
This will then reset the counter back to 100%.

You will be able to see when your characters will act depending on what you choose to do for each of them.
Your characters will only execute your choices once you have chosen for all of them.

Sophie generally sucks at hitting things on the head. Unless she is a little overleveled against whatever you are facing. Don't be afraid to use items. You need to make more and more to improve your alchemy level anyway.
Consumable items need to be equipped. Each character has 5 slots for this.
Sophie can equip anything other characters are more limited in weight (item level) or type.

@Kasseopea I found the first new character during seed/fruit says on the street but he/she didn't join my party immediately. I have to talk to him/her often for a while then he/she joined my party. By talking to hime/her means to trigger a scene. Hint: most scene triggers during fruit and sprout day.

Would love to know how to unlock additional party characters. I don't want fatty on my team, and it's not exactly easy to fight with 2 characters.

Agh! I didn't realize pressing Encyclopedia Entry (Back on 360) would reveal what traits can go onto which piece of equipment. I feel so silly now. Thanks guy! >_<

@Frozen Sovereign, certain traits can only be transferred to certain items.
Check the google sheet in "Trait List" for what can be transferred to weapons and armour.

@Xian, neutralizers need to be crafted. Check the google sheet under "Recipe Idea List" for Neutralizers. The earliest available is Red Neutralizer.

Grayed out traits mean they can't be transfered
