If you're crashing a lot, read me! (December 2016 EA crash)
By TheAlphaPigeon
[BEFORE YOU EMBARK] This guide was written as a quick fix solution for a crashing bug endemic to the game while it was still in Early Access circa December, 2016. This guide has not been updated nor tested on the fully released version nor any patches applied to Subnautica post release. The steps described here may fix whatever issue you have, but it may also very much ruin whatever save file yoi're attempting to rescue. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. [Added September 2020]

If you're a terrible driver or spaceship-captain-in-training you should probably avoid this planet entirely like just stay out of this whole solarsystem man. On a more serious note, this is a guide that details fixes for a memory related lag-crash bug that has affected players worldwide. There are procedures for three different systems listed in this guide, the most detailed of which being Windows (for that is the system I am familiar with). Please give this a positive rating if it helped you so people know this is a viable temporary solution.

Crashing Fix!
So the latest patch is causing some grief. For a lot of people this includes an increase in lag and hard crashes as the hours in game stack up. However, this crash is not a time related issue. What is happening is that, the more you save the more the data files start to pile up, particularly files concerning dead animals, uncollected resources, and creature eggs. Every time you save the game throws up more and more files to accomodate these articles. This would explain why some people (those who don't save frequently) don't experience this combined lag and crash-to-desktop until they've logged up to 20+ hours in game, while others (who save quite often) can have problems as early as 5 or less hours into a save. Starting a new save file won't improve the situation as you still have the piles upon piles of data in your folders. Fear not however! There's a temporary fix for what is going on!

For Windows, delete the cellscache and compiledoctreescache folders in Subnautica\SNAppData\SavedGames\slotwhatever and the crashing will stop, at least until you log several more hours of gameplay. Hopefully we'll get a real fix next update.

The only issue with this is that any terraforming done during base building is undone, and that can kill your base. There's a workaround this;

Go into your game, and press f1. There should be a bit of data there. You're looking for something called camera batch # and the numbers should list off similarly to this 12,18,13. Go to your base, and walk around the ENTIRE THING. Hugging the walls and writing down whatever numbers appear, if the numbers don't change that's fine just record what you see. Then, in the folders, delete all the batch data EXCEPT for the files concerning the numbers written down

For MAC users go to your user folder. Open your hidden library (google how to unhide it) / application support / steam / steamapps / common / subnautica then follow the directions of thread.

If you're using Oculus Home instead of Steam.

C:/Users/{username}/AppData/Roaming/Subnautica/SavedGames/

After going to C:/Users/{username}/AppData/Roaming/Subnautica/SavedGames/ and clearing the caches for your save,

you also have to go to C:/ProgramFiles/Oculus/Software/Software/unknown-worlds-subnautica/SNUnmanagedData/Build18

Ignore the autosave folders and just empty the same 2 cache folders here.

FOLLOWING THE PRECURSOR UPDATE(info obtained by the user HELLfire): I can say with 99% certainty that using the fix and resetting the data, it DOES reset the precusor door (atleast it did in my "old" experimental build when i had to do it) But it will also reset the keys you can find, so not a big deal IMO. Same with Aurora. Any datapads will also spawn anew, but since you already got them, nothing will happen when you click on them.

If you need a clarification, feel free to ask. Otherwise, give this a positive rate if you found this useful so people know this is a valid solution to one of the many problems plaguing Subnautica these days!

hint if you have a bad graphics card BUY A NEW ONE and subnauticia has enough power to crash my whole computer even with good GPU so i'm starting to think subnautica has a hacked/courropted file

I think this is what happened with one of my old saves, except it completely corrupted the file, and spawned me back in the starting pod. Adding to frustration, the crafting station was gone, making the file unplayable.

@Rick Dangerous
this has nothing to do with the crashing but I just want to say that getting the cyclops was easy

Started the game at about mid to high graphics 60+ fps,as time passed i realised that it started lagging and now it is crashing all the time making it unplayable.The funny thing is it was released a few days ago after a long time in early access and yet to fix this major issue,i consider refund:steamfacepalm:

I never had a game crash once while playing until I built the Cyclops. Now it crashes within 60 seconds to 2 minutes. I read the fix, but the compiledoctreescache folder was not with the cellscache folder. But even after deleting the cellscache it continued to crash so did a search in the subnautica dir to find the compiledoctreecache folder and delete. There where 3 of them in various areas. I deleted all 3 and the game still crashed. So I did a search for cellscache as well and found a couple instances of that outside the savedgame dir to delete, but made no difference.

Pretty frustrating. Worked pretty hard to get the Cyclops and its now made the game unplayable. Really hate to start a new game, especially if chances are the same thing will happen :(
