I was playing as the Black Venom but doing nothing at all. This video shows the behaviour of the AI in the campaign when there is no player involved. Be sure to speed up, slow down or pause the video if you need to!

Because the player isn't involved, Chaos is actually a lot stronger in the campaign as the AI has a hard time dealing with the hordes on its own. That's why most of the map turned into ruins quite quickly. Once Chaos was defeated, nations like the Empire and the Vampires started to rise again.
