Optimized FOV for Widescreen Resolutions

This guide will show you how to achieve an improved FOV for 1080p similar to ZDoom's by messing with the finicky FOV settings.

Feel nauseated?
Shadow Warrior Classic Redux has a very, very narrow FOV by default due to Ken Silverman's strangely-coded 2D engine. If the following screenshot causes you to vomit profusely all over your $380 BenQ 1ms 144Hz sponsored Pro Gamer monitor,

then it's not your GTX 1080's faulty drivers or anything. It's Shadow Warrior's fault, and you don't have to take it like this. No, really, look closer at that field of vision. Was this game not made for a Tex Avery cartoon character?[3.bp.blogspot.com] Tweaking guides[www.wsgf.org] online will tell you that the FOV scales just fine, but never will they reveal what the correct settings are. It could be that only five people still play this game in 2016, or it could be that finding the right FOV settings for Shadow Warrior Classic Redux is a cryptic, hellish process involving the most state-of-the-art technology at mankind's disposal.

Common sense dictates that 110 FOV is enough for older games made for 4:3 monitor resolutions, but even at 120 FOV you will have a splitting migraine within 5 minutes of playing. With this guide, you will be able to play at a custom FOV setting that is just like the one in ZDoom, the popular modern Doom source port.
How to fix the FOV
Step 1: Locate the local config file
Right-click Shadow Warrior Classic Redux in your library and click "properties". Click the local files tab and select "browse local files". This will take you to the game's folder, where you will click "gameroot". Scroll until you find the file titled "sw-redux-local.cfg". If you do not have this file in your folder for whatever reason, then boot up Shadow Warrior and mess with any option to generate a new one.
Step 2: Edit the config file
Open "sw-redux-local.cfg" in the text editor of your choice and look for this line:
[Options] FOV = 90
Change it to this:
[Options] FOV = 135
If your cfg does not include this line, then you can simply copy and paste the above into it. Save and close the file.
Step 3: Set the config file to read-only
This is mandatory. Right-click "sw-redux-local.cfg" and select "properties". Right next to "attributes" tick the box "read-only". You are required to do this because Shadow Warrior Classic Redux has a bad habit of messing up settings like FOV, sound volume, and mouse sensitivity every time you boot it up. Setting the file to read-only prevents the game from messing with your personalized tweaks.
16:9 aspect ratio in Shadow Warrior at long last

We now live in a future where you can play Shadow Warrior at 1080p at the right FOV settings. Glorious.
Cracking the FOV code
Finding the right FOV settings for Shadow Warrior was not a simple matter of fiddling with the FOV slider like a casual. It took countless hours of effort and a level of ingenuity one would not expect from a connosieur of a game that features anime tiddy and dialogue like [to naked lady defecating on a toilet] Hey baby! Pull my finger! Hahaha!

Like all good things FPS, it started with Doom. Specifically, a small, no-effort map of 500 units between the player and a wall with an impassable line placed 101 units (again, no effort) in front of it. I ran it through a classic DOS Doom-to-Duke Nukem 3D map converter[www.dukertcm.com], then loaded the converted .MAP file into Shadow Warrior's map editor and saved it into the SW MAP format.

From there, it was a matter of increasing the FOV in the config file until the visible 101-unit distance between Lo Wang and the wall matched that of GZDoom. The player heights and aspect ratios are different between all 3 games, but the principle is the same. Yes, 135 FOV in Shadow Warrior is the same as 90 FOV in Doom and no, it does not make sense whatsoever.

Thank you for reading this guide. I'd like to thank CodeImp for the resources I was able to use to calculate the FOV. I would also like to thank BenQ, whose generous warranties cover monitor destruction by all sorts of bodily wastes.

Not sure why the poor ratings. I did this fix and while it wasn't "perfect" it was a massive improvement over the default FOV. The Tex Avery joke was also pretty funny because it's a pretty accurate representation of how the default FOV feels to me.
