Ok, I spent some time and it seems the information is out there, but scattered and not clear to many people. Took me a while as well:

From here:

-Patch the game to 1.05,
-Then install a NO-CD fix from Game Copy World or any other source you want
(I uploaded the fix from GCW to filedropper http://www.filedropper.com/rt3 )(dead link, working files below)
Just paste it into the game folder and replace the rtc.exe file

-Install 1.06 patch (same file as hawkdawg page, but no need to register/login)

After all that, apply the Vista patch (on hawkdawg page)

Resolution

I play at 2560x1440. How?

The tool is simple to use, just point it to the file at the place your game is installed
( \SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Railroad Tycoon 3 )

Type in any supported resolution.

FPS cap (save your GPU from meltdown)

For the FPS (game renders over 2000 framers per second, unnecessary strain, it's bad)
Use nvidia inspector (AMD must have it's own tool, google it):

Run it, click wrench and screwdriver icon on Driver Version,
Find Railroad Tycoon 3 from the list and under Sync and Refresh, choose Frame Rate Limiter.
I used 120 fps. I did try to force Triple buffering and Vertical Sync as well, but that didn't seem to work.

The very reason I even recommend doing that, is because my 1080 was pretty loud playing this game in the menus... Capping the frames fixed that.

Can anybody tell me exactly what's being patched for the resolution? RT3 play beautifully on Linux, but a higher resolution would be wonderful.

Sorry, No Windows 11 for me yet, it feels a bit unfinished :P That's rich coming from me, since I always started with Windows Beta branch, but this one feels fishy.

Got anything for windows 11? mine worked fine on windows 10 but I bought this computer with windows 11 and now it won't work.

Agreed..I have no issues running rt2 off of steam. Outside of graphic glitches from time to time. But this one...omg! If I didn't have graphic issues while recording the game using my disc version. Along with the resolution issue between each scene(in which I get with the steam version also, anyway). I wouldn't have bought the steam version. Because my disc version runs just fine outside of recording.

No questions are stupid, come on. Yes, it needs to be installed. There are some games that need fixes to even BE installed, so it really is a valid question (16 bit installers). I don't get it why, but RT2 seems to be way better working and optimised for modern PC than RT3.

I am assuming the game needs to be installed before applying/installing/downloading any of the fixes? Not my first roadyoh needing to do something like this. Just trying to make sure it's the same for this game as well. Slightly stupid question, I just like clearity.

Not sure what you mean, it crashes sometimes for me randomly, for that I do not have a fix.
