Devils Tower, WY

Devils Tower was the first ever United States National Monument, earning that designation in 1908. This butte rises above the Belle Fourche River in northeastern Wyoming. Formed from columns of basalt that failed to erode away when the sedimentary rocks around it did, Devils Tower is a popular site for rock climbing, and holds spiritual significance to several Native American tribes. It featured in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

You’ll start just across the Belle Fourche on a small plain near the entrance station. The road approximates Highway 24: the railroad is fictional. The river flows south to north and isn’t navigable. There’s a smattering of fertile land along the river banks. As this is Wyoming, you’ll find plenty of oil and ore. Will your city become a tourist trap, or an economic powerhouse?
