Thanks for commenting. The reason I consider strike craft (both fighters and bombers) useless is because they are instantly killed by point defense and never respawn for the rest of the fight. Even a very small amount of PD will put a fleet of strike craft out of the flight - this fact is reflected in the popularity of using PD against Fallen Empires.
In controlled tests, Fighters are technically better PD than Flak or Missiles in terms of missiles shot down in the opening round of a battle. However, Flak has much greater range than fighters and can be mounted on front line destroyers, allowing anti-missile/fighter coverage on the front lines long after the Fighters have been shot down or furballed.
