The "Butterfly" achievement, probably the easiest way.

Introduction
Greetings, traveller!

Getting 50 friends in a game that (unfortunately) is past its prime seems like a daunting task, doesn't it? Fear not, for fortune smiles upon you! There is a very easy way of getting the achievement out of the way.
Walkthrough
All you need to do is start an online game.
Then, you need to click on "Add Friend".
What you need to do now is write a random name and click on the tick sign. Rinse and repeat up to 49 times and that should net you the achievement.

If you don't feel very creative, you can also do as follows: on the server browser screen, tick "Show Offline Players" and click your way to victory. Both ways should work perfectly.
Final notes
Thank you for reading! I hope you find this guide helpful, cheers!

If you have a Runic account, but don't remember the password you may be in for a fun trip trying to get it.

Otherwise, just type random three letter combos until you get 50.

qwe, asd, asf, byt, nut

Be there in no time.

That's an interesting find, thanks for sharing! I couldn't do extensive testing because there is no way to lock achievements (apart from using fishy 3rd party software).

The people you're adding exist, they're just offline.

The friend system in Torchlight 2 is a one-way street. You add them without them receiving a notification and they have no idea you friended them and they don't have you friended. It's an outdated system that can be used to stalk people.

Diablo 2 Battle.net had the same system.

Well, I was quite surprised, too.

I already got the achievement, I just checked the online section everytime I started the game and added everybody who was playing online. Didn't know you could add "not real" people. *-)

Not really. Completely random names should suffice, regardless of whether there is a user with such a name or not. That's what worked for me, at least. You can also try the second option. Also, you should be able to track the achievement's progress in the meantime. Let me know how it goes, okay? ;)
