Intro
Hello, my name is Ji.

I've been playing KF2 on Ultra and have had a consistent 60+ fps, but I have a 240hz monitor so I prefer to have my games run at 240 fps or higher. Even if you don't have a 240hz monitor this guide will still help you if you are struggling to achieve 60 fps or if you just want to get the most out of your PC's performance.

I did a lot of testing and found out which video settings had the highest FPS impact.

**TLDR settings screenshot in the Imgur album at bottom**
Basic
- Aspect Ratio: 16:9 (if you have a wide screen monitor you may want this set to 16:10).

- Resolution: 1920x1080 (or higher if your monitor supports higher resolutions *note higher res require more system resources*).

- Graphics: Custom (Changes when you change settings).

- Vertical Sync: Off (Only turn on if you're experiencing a lot of screen tearing but note this could increase input lag if you're not getting FPS equal to your monitors refresh rate).

- Display: Fullscreen (For gaming, it's better to run games on Fullscreen over Borderless that way your video card allocates majority of it's resources to the game being played).

- Variable Frame Rate: On (This lets you get over 60 fps, with this off it caps your game at 60).

- Film Grain: Default (I left this where it was due to preference).

- Gamma: Default (Purely preference)
Advanced
- Environment Detail: Ultra (This surprisingly had little change to FPS)

- Character Detail: Ultra (This also had little change to FPS)

- FX: Ultra (This makes explosions look nicer and things like that, not a huge FPS drop, but you can lower this if you find to many Demos lagging you).

- Texture Resolution: Ultra (Adds a little more detail to certain textures like guns and such, very small FPS impact).

- Texture Filtering: Bilinear (This has a big FPS impact with little change to look of the game, I tested all of the options and it's just not worth to have anything higher then low).

- Shadow Quality: Low (HUGE FPS impact, the shadows are nice, but anything over Medium is not really worth it and even that isn't that big of an upgrade, plus makes things a but harder to see).

- Realtime Reflections: Off (Another big FPS killer, this makes reflections of lights shine off Zed and such, cool I guess but not worth the 15 - 20 fps drop).

- Anti-Aliasing: FXAA (About a 5 FPS drop with this on, but honestly that's not very much and it makes the game look very nice, if you're really hurting on FPS then you can turn this off).

- Bloom: Off (About a 4 FPS drop, purely preference, but with this enabled Firebugs Fires can start to cause massive fps drops later into rounds).

- Motion Blur: Off (Low FPS impact, disabled due to preference).

- Ambient Occlusion: SSAO (About 5 FPS drop with this on SSAO, around 10 with it on HBAO+. I really didn't see much difference with it on the ladder so I choose to save 5 frames here).

- Depth of Field: Off (This makes what you're aiming at clear and the background blurry, not really needed, with it off everything is clear so... also no FPS impact, purely preference).

- Volumetric Lighting FX: On (This had very little impact on FPS, enabled due to preference).

- Lens Flares: Off (Little to no FPS drop with this on or off, this makes lights have a bright shine to them, distracting on your eyes and completely cosmetic and useless imo purely preference).

- Light Shafts: Off (This makes light radiate with almost a glare effect to it, disabled due to preference).
Closing
That pretty much wraps up the video settings.

I'll link some screenshots below of Low, Ultra, and my settings so you can see the difference.

Everything here is subject to change in future patches and optimization of KF2.

If you have any questions please leave a comment below and I'll do my best to answer them asap!

Thanks for playing an amazing game and I hope to see you on the floor!!

- Ji

Thanks for the guide.

I use the same GPU. In the area of the picture with all settings set to low i get around 130fps. When i change billnear to anisotropic x16 it costs me around 5fps. Environmental Details and FX cost me more than 20fps.

So i just increase character details, resolution and texture filtering.

Note: Bloom is what makes light sources "glow". That includes light sources found on the map, the blue outlines on medic weapons, the flames on the flamethrower, etc. It typically does not have an impact because there are very little light sources that use bloom - until firebugs join the server. When firebugs spray their flames everywhere, it uses massive bloom on the flames which causes a medium-high FPS impact so just be aware of that. It's not really a proper benchmark to sit in the same spot doing nothing to determine the framerate. The best way is to actually play a game with these settings and get an average.

Thanks for the comment with the details about the GTX 1050. I use that GPU on my desktop, so it was quite helpful!

Just wanted to add some info, might help someone out:

I'm using a laptop that has a 2GB GTX1050, so I'll be speaking for my GPU.

Texture Filtering: I've seen some FPS increase when I changed it to Bilinear from 16x, I think it effects certain GPUs.
Realtime Reflection: 10% additional usage without much to notice.
Ambient Occlusion: Between Off and SSAO, there is a 10% increase in usage without much difference. Additional 10% usage when switching from SSAO to HBAO+ but this time, personally at least, the game looks better.

I haven't tested Shadow but texture quality should effect performance very little if you have at least 2GBs of vRAM

I recommend setting Bloom to Low. It doesn't effect performance much but High is too forced and off is too dim if you ask me.

Turning off all other "On and Off settings" that *DON'T* require restarting should give you about 10% increase in performance in total with some settings impacting the visual quality quite a bit.
