So, yeah, Edelweiss finally reprints Ether Vapor and gives it a graphics overhaul. Gone are the lack of textures, welcome more explosive effects and pew pew and lock-on guided laser missiles+traditional missile barrages and manly mecha! This game is freaking awesome. Period.

The remake also updates the resolution (originally, it ran at 640x480, it still does but not you can crank it up a bit more), removes all traces of story and replaces it with badass mechanical action and ordnances exchanges, overall, it looks way way better. So better that some of the effects cloud some bullets/missiles, heh. Most noticeable in Stage 2 where I kind of dodge everything but the laser missiles at the end. Some old tricks still work. Dodging those missiles didn't.

Being the owner of the original release (years passed, I'm still thanking SFKhoa for it!), I can safely say that the people who couldn't get it back then by all means should get it now if able. There are more places and means to buy it now compared to a couple of years ago! And the joy of doujin STGs implies no DRM, no horrible crap, just install and play and drop a message to the dev to tell him how freaking awesome this game is!

No scoring complexities. You shoot, pray and eventually "overkill" some enemies for extra points. The rail shooting bonus sections offer nice scores if you aim well but there are no big mysteries or hidden alchemy or 9000 flying numbers on screen. This is a very traditional STG with multiple camera angles and badassery flowing from its enemy patterns (crafting engaging enemy waves that look cool and move great is a huge feat in and on itself!) and weapons.

Definitely gonna get this again, that's for sure. I'll probably contact Edelweiss to suggest some additional distribution means. The game has an "English" option in the menu so they also thought about it.

Last note: I'm glad they didn't change the music. I hate forced changes and the original music is awesome to me. I didn't want some horrid techno punchi-punchi or j-pop where it's not applicable.

edit: and yes, I fail, got hit twice. Cut me some slack, I haven't been playing any proper STGs in a while so I'm quite rusty.
