@Fox Fine: The point is the Sandbox Mode. Dead Rising 2 should have had a Sandbox Mode for the game, but it decided not to. The frustration of having to stick with the story (and being on a timer constantly -AND- Katy needing Zombrex) makes leisure time impossible to have in-game, for those who wish to just play the game without constant nagging from a walkie talkie to do missions.

Dead Rising 3 brought it back, at least.
