ALTERNATIVE
Run through Voobly. Make sure to host your own lobby and select the setting to Start at Single Player menu.

The HD version uses text files to enable modding whilst the original game uses DLL files. For some reason, the compatibility patch does not give the correct language files, yet the game runs fine through Voobly.
