Opis
"A horrible chill runs down your spine..."

The Eater of Worlds, a gigantic corrupted worm that awakens upon breaking several shadow orbs. Using his extreme size and speed, he charges his target from the underground, and quickly surrounds his foes with several sections of his body. As he takes damage, he splits into several autonomous sections, which immediately enter the fray as new combatants.

I think this may be the most heavily requested boss I've seen since making the Eye. I've put him off for a long time for several reasons, both technical and artistic. I had to rethink his design several times, and there were a lot of technical hurdles that caused me to put him off. With the new year, I decided it was time to go for broke and finish him.

The first few designs had him as a hyper-realistic toothy worm. He was something of a mobile sarlaac pit with really crusty skin and rows upon rows of teeth. As I mulled it over, and as I was disgusted by image searches of toothed worms(seriously, don't google that), I came to the conclusion that I was taking his design in the wrong direction. The Eye and Skeletron both have that "unsettling" yet "goofy" aspect to them. A super real corpse worm wouldn't mesh well with the style of these characters, so I settled on something that was a touch more silly than gross.

As with everything from Terraria, I had to guess at a few of his features. Seeing as he drops purple worm scales when you break him, it's fairly reasonable to assume that he's storing them somewhere inside him. As such, I made his interior entirely out of these scales, which I assume are just regular wormy guts tainted/hardened by the corruption.

Just a random thought, perhaps the Eater of Worlds moves around the map devouring stone. The stone gets refined/corrupted as he digests it with his "scales". After it has passed through his system, it becomes Demonite, which he then deposits in little amounts around the underground. That would explain why Demonite is found so far from any corruption. That's just a theory, though.

Notes

-I found the easiest way to manage his enormous length was to make several different versions with varying sizes. Small and Medium should work for most cases. Tiny is reserved for the smallest worm. Large is more of a catch all, and is only there in the event you need something really big for a special shot.

-Sizes(including the head and tail):
Tiny: 3 sections
Small: 6 sections
Medium: 12 sections
Large: 24 sections

-You shouldn't need more than 24 lengths. The Large model is expensive(20k tris). Use it sparingly. If you need a longer worm, then you may need to reconsider your shot.

-Each version of the worm has a facial flex called "OpenMouth", which opens his mouth.

-The mandibles are the small internal pincers, and the tusks are the large external ones. The tusks were not made to bend very far. Use small motions with the tusks to reduce warping.

-Be sure to use FK posing when wrapping the worm into a position. Once you're set on a pose, you can lock all the bones and twist the individual sections of the worm to give him a better coiling effect.

The original concept and design of the "Eater of Worlds" is the intellectual property of "Re-Logic".

You know, I've never tried the Destroyer rig with this. It might work, though I can't remember if the bone names are the same.

That said, the destroyer rig is specifically designed to make the thrusters and exhaust ports more manageable by grouping them. Applying the destroyer rig to this won't make eater of worlds any easier to manipulate. There is no IK for either worm. See my previous comment for more info.

Ah, I see. Well, thank you anyway for clearing that up for me!

I did not make a rig script for this because there was nothing to really rig or sort. I normally provide a rig script if a model has either:

A. Arms or Legs, or something requiring joint IK.
B. A large number of bones with a confusing bone structure.

If you were looking for a rig script to provide IK for the worm, that feature is currently not available in SFM. At least, as far as I know.

Will there be a rig for this model? And if there is, would someone please direct me to the rig? Thank you! :3
