The Antipope
- You may have seen in your games, moreso when the HRE is formed, that there is an Antipope set up by someone such as the Holy Roman Emperor.

- You can make your own, and collect off it as well, indulging yourself in the money your Antipope recieves from vassal Bishoprics and their own lands, as if he was your vassal.

- First, you need a Prince-Bishop. Simply put, a landed Bishop.

- Additionally you will need 500 prestige.

- Go to the religion tab that says "The Catholic Faith", and find the Prince-Bishop that likes you more than the Pope. There should be a "Make Antipope" button in the UI, beneath that Bishop's opinion of you.

- Congratulations, you have established a Pope of your own! You can even request claims on entire duchies from your Pope, for very cheap costs, especially if your crown law is under Papal investiture! You will have it in with your Pope and you can excommunicate others

Additionally, you can make your antipope have up to a kingdom-level title while you're at an emperor level title if you so desire it. He will pay taxes as if he were a vassal and provide levies. The one only downside is the CBs others get on you to depose your pope.

Doing this also has no DLC requirements, so you're free to have as many antipopes as you'd like until they control 10% of your country. However be aware you can have one antipope even if they are controlling 20% of your country. Simply, the absolute minimum is 1 prince-bishopric-landholder.

Vassal Republic
Creating a Republic
- This is stunningly simple to create, requiring a county, and a duchy containing that county in your possession, along with a city existing within that county. Additionally you will need at least King rank to have a republic under your belt.

- Give a person who controls a city a county. They will become a Lord Mayor. Then give them the de jure duchy of that province. You will have created a republic if the duchy is coastal.

More importantly, your antipope will have a claim on the papacy. If you are an emporer you can press his claim, and then the REAL pope will be your vassal, meaning you get a cut of all the taxes sent to the pope (which includes that sent by other realm's bishops who like the pope more than their king).

also this extends your powers of title claming and excommunication to the entirety of christendom, as well as allowing you to control crusade targets.

I've just tested it, and I see that's the way for the antipapacy. Thanks for the update, and I'll add it into the guide.

@Lombardia At least in recent history, I do not think that was the case. Did you happen to grant those titles after he was already made anti-pope? Were mods involved? As Thaanos said, creating an anti-pope is a button in the Religion tab, and the selected bishop does not need to be granted a county- or duchy-tier title prior to, or after, naming him anti-pope.

The Creating a Republic section is great! I just tested it out; it's much easier than I remember it being in the past, and I :ambition: to do it soon in my Ironman save.

At least prior to conclave, granting a prince bishop, a bishop-count, a duchy would result in the formation of an antipapacy. I haven't played since conclave came out, only prior, so I'm not too keen on the new features.

That's not an anti-pope, that's a prince-Bishop. You create an anti-pope in the religion tab, there's a button beside bishops that like you more then the pope, and you can make them an anti-pope.
