This guide will go through piles of information found across the internet and the best possible connection to old mythologies in Europe.
I'd consider this guide mostly going after European mythology / Christian Religion. Due to history of mankind and it's cultural effects during the last 2000 years.
Also, this guide only covers the core characters and their connections and representations due to bigger impacts.

Old Books, Wikipedia Articles, Tales from parents.

Nobody knows if its true or not. But we know one thing, and that is that Undertale has definitely taken some inspiration off these topics, and if you have played the game you should have noticed.

I will constantly update the guide if I find more information to a certain topic. See the last part of the guide for more information.

The whole truth can be revealed together.

The Underground consits of several areas.

• The Ruins
  
• Snowdin
  
• Waterfall
  
• Hotland
  
• Capital

That's 5 areas.
Each one with thair owen Music, Look, etc.
Not only that, the story tells you that the monsters were banished there by the humans after a great war where the humans came out victorious and the monsters did not (hence, they were banished).
Before that there was peace... but the game tells you that the humans attacked first and fast.
You want to leave the underground to get home... so you think.
Underway you meet so many nice monsters... Toriel, Napstablook, Sans, Papyrus, Undyne, Alphys, Mettaton, Asgore... and the most noble one, Asriel.


Hell is a place of torment, punishment, and eternal suffering.
So there are supposed to be 9 rings.
Written in the Divine Comedy, an epic poem by Dante Alighieri in the year 1300.
The poem tells about the journey of Dante, who is going through the 9 circles to ascend to God.

The connection here is that you have fallen to hell. BUT!!! That doesn't mean it must be just that. There are some mythologies who say that "hell", or "the underground" is populated by demons who don't have to be evil.
And when you progress you make your way to the end of the game > To the last ring and closer to God & Heaven.

Asgore rules the Underground. "Lord Asgore Dreemurr"
As already told ingame, he lost his son and thus he declared war on the humans, every human who came down there should be killed and such.Toriel found that very disgusting and so she left him.
His full name is an anagram of "Sage or Murderer"
Still, he wants to die due to the humans he killed. That's why his trident is painted red... so he dosent need to see the blood on it. And the destrucion of the mercy button states out that he wants to die and he dosnt deserver mercy (truly following the "Kill or be Killed" way).
Many monsters consider Asgore to be a great king.
And yet he's taked with the responsibility of freeing the monsters of their prison by taking 7 human souls... and one of a boss monster.




Asgore would be considered a hero. Which he still is, due to the fact that he managed to keep the kingdom together and gave hope to everyone by doing the hardest thing for him.
Taking the soul of another.

King in the mountain is a tale of a sleeping hero in the mythology of many cultures.

It involves someone of a great status who is in a sleep to someday return and free the land of the bad & evil to bring peace & hope.
The Status of a sleeping hero is mostly given to leaders of a militaristic status.
Such as "Friedrich I. Barbarossa"

Toriel is the second character you meet in Undertale and probably the best mother to be in anygame. She's was the mother of Asriel and the wife of Asgore.
As of current state where you meet her she already left Asgore due to his actions provoked by the death of his and hers son Asriel. Her wish was to be a teacher and you can see that happen at the end of the game.

Toriel is the first boss to be encountered in undertale .. And I advise you not to hurt her.



Toriel would be most likely to be represent Mother Earth . This is a tricky one due to the fact that there are many definitions of one mother for all.

As alone there are :
3 in Greece
3 in Germany

But going for the definition of the world

Mother Earth is in mythology and today's culture the meaning of a fertile world.
So to be said a care taker for every living thing on the planet.

Asriel is the dead son of Toriel & Asgore. He gave up his life to save the first fallen human called "Chara". As of his death, Asgore declared war on the humans and thus Toriel left him.
He was then reborn into a flower without a soul so he could not feel any emotions and such.
He's known as Flowey the Flower at the beginning of the game but... many say it is still him.
I'd say its not.


At the end of the true pacifist ending, you see how Asriel comes back into his full form with the power of 6 human souls and almost every monster soul in the underground.
"A power equal to God". Which allows him to reset the time line and do almost everything.
When you fight him he tells you he's been using only a fraction of the power available to him.

Angel of Death



This is the exact form as on the delta rune, and what the game's story told.
An angel who will free the monsters... or who will kill them all.
Also worth to mention his name is originated from the Hebrew regions and is called
"My help is God" & "My friend blessed God"


The Baphomet is a sabbatic Goat which the representation of "sum total of the universe".
The name Baphomet appeared in July 1098 in a letter by the crusader Anselm of Ribemont:

"As the next day dawned, they called loudly upon Baphometh; and we prayed silently in our hearts to God, then we attacked and forced all of them outside the city walls."


The power of "binding and loosing" usurped from God and, according to Catholic tradition, from the ecclesiastical hierarchy acting as God's representative on Earth.

The only information available through out the internet is that.

The Templar Knights worshiped this symbol, which is why its not stated. The only thing stated are letters from the nogoing Crusades.

Would be displayed as the evil by most people. Due to the fact that she can take control of everything. She was the first human to ever fall down into the underground, was the step child of Toriel & Asgore, and the new sister of Asriel. She poisoned Asgore once by using the wrong ingredient in a cake recipe.

Chara was described to have found joy in hurting people around her. And that she hated humanity very much. As she died, Asriel tried to fulfill her last wish but died by doing so.
Its worth mentioning that with Chara in Asriel's soul, she tried to kill everyone in the village but Asriel refused.

Chara would be described as "Evil"

You play as Frisk in Undertale as the 8th Human to ever fall down into the underground.
You have the choice of either saving the Underground and bringing the monsters out of the prison they are trapped in.
Or by either killing everyone and bringing everything back to 0 just to endlessy repeat the circle until its broken by deleting 2 files.

Frisk would be described as "Good".
But that dosen't need to be untill the cycle is broken.

These 2 humans, the first and the last could, be described as Evil & Good.

One fights for God, and the other for Satan. This goes back to before Christianity and Europe.
Around 1000 BC.
Where Good and Evil were displayed by deeds in old literature.
Where most humans possesed a Heart of Darkness.

The sigil of the Monsters is the Delta Rune.

Displaying the Angel of Death, Asriel in his ultimate form.

And the triangles under him. Either to be killed or to be freed.
And its shaped in a heart to represent a soul.





The closest thing to the Delta Rune would be the sign of Trinity "Shield of Faith".
As it represents 3 powers to make one. Same as in Undertale.

Asgore as the Father,
Asriel as the Son,
Toriel as the Spirit,
Creating:

Something what can be created by that is hard to say, as it's spectrum is big but I'd suggest.
It creates "Frisk". The last human to ever come down.

The things may vary as they are. But what I stated in this guide is the closest for Undertale to come into the real world.

This guide is there to show that the things shown in Undertale are... well, a bit more real than we think they are.
Sure you maybe never will have a mother like Toriel, and a brother like Asriel, and a father like Asgore.
But the point is... they represent what can be done if you have the determination to be more than just a human.
