An Introduction to the Intuitive Isolation (Steam Controller Bindings) Guide

Hello to all in the Steam Community!

Within this guide, I will explain in detail each binding, how they work and when they should be utilized to fully enjoy your Steam Controller experience. By following this guide when first using my Intuitive Isolation bindings, you will easily adapt and if at any point need clarification as to what a specific input function enatils, simply use this guide as a reference to get back on track.

Generally speaking, once you begin using these bindings for the first time, you'll likely be able to play without much assistance whatsoever. It was created to feel natural during play. So although, you may need to check once or twice for a reminder of what a certain input does, you'll soon have everything memorized without much effort. One can easily dismiss this guide and just learn while in game, it really is that intuitive, but I thought that creating this guide would better serve the community overall in the case that anyone runs into any issues.

So in closing, thank you for utilizing my Intuitive Isolation Steam Controller bindings as well as reading this guide. If either one has made your Alien: Isolation experience a better one, please say thanks by giving them a thumbs up and of course feel free to message me in the comments section if you require assistance.

Initial In Game Configuration Setttings To Apply
Please ensure that you have matched and applied the settings as seen below within the Alien: Isolation game configuration settings before continuing. This will ensure that your experience is exactly as intended.

The only in game setting that should need to be changed is setting controller sensitivity to it's maximum value. Everything else is set to default.
Left Trigger
The left trigger contains two functions. The Primary function is set to AIm Down Sights (ADS) and the secondary function after holding down (Mode Shift/Left Grip) is a Quick Weapon Select that cycles through each weapon you posess at any given time.

Please view the captures below for details on the settings applied within the Steam Controller bindings menu.

Right Trigger
The Right Trigger has two functions. It's Primary function is set to Attack/Use Item and it's secondary function (Mode Shift) is set to Primary: Take/Accept/Select. The secondary function using mode select (Primary: Take/Accept/Select) is one of two (Take/Accept/Select) commands used in the Intuitive Isolation bindings and is best suited for reliability. I recommend this to be used in situations where 100% accuracy is needed.

Note: The secondary Take/Accept/Select is best suited for simple situations such as searching bodies by double clicking the Right Touch Pad, but well get into that further into the guide during the chapter titled "Right Touch Pad".

Please view the captures below for details on the settings applied within the Steam Controller bindings menu.

Left Bumper
The Left Bumper is set to use or better said to raise you tracking device which will match your characters motions in game. This adds quite a bit of realism visually and physically with your Steam Controller, which adds to the overall atmosphere of the game.

Please view the captures below for details on the settings applied within the Steam Controller bindings menu.

Right Bumper
The Right Bumper is set to "Peek" which when held down will allow you to "Peek" around corners or over/under objects when using Joystick Move in your chosen direction.

Please view the captures below for details on the settings applied within the Steam Controller bindings menu.

Left Grip
The Left Grip has two functions. It's Primary function is Reload Weapon/Take All and it's secondary function is Mode Shift which will be used quite often during you time in Alien Isolation, so make a mental note of it's functionality and importance. To use Mode Shift simply hold down the Left Grip and then use a corresponding trigger or button that has a Mode Shift enabled action bound to it.

Please view the captures below for details on the settings applied within the Steam Controller bindings menu.

Right Grip
The Right Grip functions as your Sneak and also serves as your change stance, as well as being used for hiding under desks or other accessable area's in game in certain situations when needed.

Please view the captures below for details on the settings applied within the Steam Controller bindings menu.

Select
The select button is used to access your in game journal, map and also for checking Identifications in game.

Please view the captures below for details on the settings applied within the Steam Controller bindings menu.

Start
The Start button functions as pause, which will bring up the in game options menu.

Please view the captures below for details on the settings applied within the Steam Controller bindings menu.

Left Track Pad
The Left TrackPad has two functions, but serve multiple purposes. Each will be explained in detail below, so you'll better understand how it functions and when to use each functionality to it's intended purpose to make your experience more enjoyable and intuitive in game.

Primary: Joystick Move (Programmed for Radial Menu, decoding, hacking and all precision GUI movement uses)

Note: This "Joystick Move" is not programmed for standard in game movement and is solely bound for the purpose of navigating gameplay interfaces that require precise and slow movement. Don't use this for charcter movement in game.

Secondary: Left Trackpad Click (B button). This secondary binding (B button) will be used incredibly often during your play of Alien Isolation. Once again make a mental note of it's location, as it will be used often as stated above.

How do I bring up the Radial Menu?

By Clicking the Left Trackpad (Bound to "B") and keeping it pressed down you will bring up the Radial Menu. While still pressing down, you can then utilize it's secondary function (Joystick Move) by moving your thumb over the item you wish to select. Once you are sure which item you wish to access, simply release the Left Trackpad ("B") while hovering over the item you desire.
You said that this Joystick Move was to be used for precise movement. Can you explain the situations that the Left Trackpad is best suited?

The Left Trackpad is always to be used in the following situations: Radial Menu Navigation, While Hacking, While Decoding and all other similar gameplay situations.

Please view the captures below for details on the settings applied within the Steam Controller bindings menu.

Analog Thumb Stick
The Analog thumb stick has two functions, Left Analog / Movement (Primary) and Left Click / Run (Secondary).

Primary Function: General in game movement. It is used for moving Amanda Ripley across the map. This was programmed specifically for ease of movement to ensure that the thumbstick requires less pressure to actuate, thus making chracter movement more fluid. By programming the thumb stick in this manner, it not only ensures that you can navigate the map using less force, but also allows you to maintain control over the other inputs you may be performing with the Steam Controller with ease.

Secondary Functionality: Left Stick Click is used for increasing Amanda Ripley's movement speed across the map. Click in whilst maintaining control of the Left Analog direction in which you desire her to navigate.

Please view the captures below for details on the settings applied within the Steam Controller bindings menu.

Face Buttons
The primary function of the face buttons is navigating numerical key pads within Alien: Isolation. Due to their linear action, the up, left, right and down keys are best suited for the direct and precise movement needed within the in game keypads presented during certain situations during play. I programmed them in this manner to ensure accuracy, as well as adding a touch of realism while navigating through the key pads. I'm sure you'll agree that I made the right decision, once you try it in game.

X: ←
B: →
A: ↓

The Face Buttons have no secondary functionality.

Please view the captures below for details on the settings applied within the Steam Controller bindings menu.

Right Trackpad
The Right Trackpad has three functions.

Primary Function: (Mouse Like - Joystick / Look) The primary function is used for looking around in game. It has been specifically design to ensure a perfect balance between accuracy and fluid movement. As noted in the captures below, there were a vast amount of adjustments made to ensure the best possible experience. If at any time you feel an adjustment needs to be made, don't touch the Steam Controller bindings and instead adjust the in game controller sensitivity. Yet, this shouldn't be an issue once you use it for a few minutes and learn it's behavior.

Secondary Functionality: (Right Trackpad Click / Flashlight) The secondary "Right Click" will serve as your flashlight. Simply click it in to turn on your flashlight and click it once again to turn it off.

Tertiary Functionality: The tertiary functionality (Double Tap / Take, Accept, Select) serves as a more easily accessable, yet secondary (Take, Accept, Select). This is best used when taking items from the deceased or selecting things within the in game options menu. Yet it can also function in multiple different ways such as accessing terminals, save points and everything else that the Primary (Take, Accept, Select) can achieve, but with less accuracy.

Thus it's best not to use this in situations where 100% accuracy and quickness is needed. The double tap functionality tends to be buggy and Valve at the time of writing this, still needs to apply and update to the firmware until it is perfect. So let that be known.

Note: When pressing the tirtiary function, you will be presented with a "beep" which adds to the atmosphere in Alien: Isolation. The sound effect it gives off, is reminiscent of the in game sounds of Alien: Isolation. Once you have grown accustomed to perfecting the double click, you like myeslf, may use it as your primary (Take, Accept, Select), simply due to this fact.

I'm having a hard time double tapping. What am I doing wrong?

When double tapping, it must be performed in this pattern to work as described below.

Example:

Tap, Tap (Hold for a second) and then let go.

After the action is performed it's best to immediately remove your thumb from the right track pad so it can refresh. Otherwise, you will continue to press the (Take, Accept, Select), which can lead to some bad situations such as climbing into a locker when escaping the Alien, yet immediately leaving the locker because, the action is still being actuated.

So make a mental note:

Tap, Tap (Hold for a second) and then let go or suffer the consequences.

Impressive guide. I can't wait to try this profile. I'm still at the very beginning of the game so I think I'll just start fresh with this set up as soon as I get a chance this weekend.
