Running Fallout 3 and You! -The Comprehensive Guide To Getting This Ol' Gem To Run!-
By Farva
The purpose of this guide is to answer all questions relating to stabilizing Fallout 3 and making it run correctly, and have all the answers in one place. There are plenty of great guides that help a great deal, but my goal is to have everything available on one page, for convenience sake.

Introduction
Hi there! First of all, thanks for visiting my guide, this is my first guide, and I'm hoping it helps in some way, feel free to ask questions or correct me in the comments. This guide aims to help ALL users get their game up and running in the most time-efficient and stable way possible. If you feel I haven't achieved this goal, let me know! I am always trying to improve.

Now, let's get this game working!
Disabling Games For Windows Live
This is an extrememly helpful change, and It's simple to do.

First off, go to this link.

http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/1086/?tab=2&navtag=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Ffallout3%2Fajax%2Fmodfiles%2F%3Fid%3D1086&pUp=1

Now, click the "Files" section on the nexus page, and download the main file manually.

Once it's finished, open the file, put the file in a folder with your Fallout3.exe, (The game folder works for this, just place the program in the folder and run it.), once you run the program, just click "Disable", close the window, and your done!
Getting The Game To Start
Getting the game to work with Windows 7 is actually really simple, we're gonna start with a few INI changes, and the game should "work" after that, but, we're not going for "Working" we're going for "Stable", so, if you choose to do the optional part, you will need NMM (Nexus Mod Manager) and some other things, but they're extremely simple to use, and I'll walk you through it anyway.

INI Changes, Stabilization

Your going to need to open your Fallout Config for this, it should be in your Fallout3 folder, which is different from the steam folder, this one holds configs and save data. To get to this folder, open Documents, My Games, and open Fallout3. From there, there should be an INI titled "FALLOUT".

Open that.

Now, your going to want to use your windows "Find" function to find a certain line in this file, open the search by pressing CTRL+F. Once you open that menu, your going to want to search for this line.

bUseThreadedAI

Once you find this line, the value should default to 0, change it to 1. Now, add a line right below there and type this.

iNumHWThreads=2

And your game should now work, not amazing, but better than before. If you would like to stabilize your game further, go to the section titled "Stabilizing Your Game"
Installing Nexus Mod Manager (Optional) (Recommended)
Nexus Mod Manager is a tool that eliminates some of the struggle of installing mods, here's how to install it.

Installing Nexus Mod Manager

This is extremely simple, just go to the Nexus website, sign up for an account or log in, and install NMM, it's at the top of the page usually. I will link the nexus site below.

http://www.nexusmods.com/

Once installed, NMM will find the directories for your games, just click the checkmark or X if you don't have them, you may have to find the directory yourself, but usually it works.
Stabilizing Your Game (Optional) (Recommended)
So, we're going to pick up the pace here and start adding different things to help our game run better, and overall improve the quality of your gameplay experience.

Installing Fallout Script Extender

FOSE is required for pretty much any mod, and it's so simple to install, you might as well.

First off, go to this website

http://fose.silverlock.org/

Now, click on the download link for Stable Version v1.2 b2

Open the file when It's complete, Now, open your fallout 3 folder in steam, and move all the files you just downloaded into your fallout game folder. Close the file you downloaded once complete.

Fallout Stutter Remover

This tweak eliminates those stutters and micro-stutters that plauge some of us, It breaks nothing, so there's no reason not to get this one.

First off, open this page.

http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/8886/?

Now, click on the Files tab, and click "Download with Manager" on the main file titled "FSR_4-0-7"

Go back to your NMM window, and it should be downloading, once it's complete, go to your plugins tab, and double click on the file. It is now active. Congrats, you installed your first mod!

Fallout 4GB Enabler (Optional) (Recommended)
This allows your game to use 4GB of ram, increasing performance. This is required if your using lots of texture replacements and things. Simple install.

Go to this page.

http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/6510/?

Now, click the files tab, and download the only file there.

Open the file, and grab your Fallout3.exe and put it into a new folder along with the contents of the file you downloaded, run the start.bat and follow the instructions to add, then put the .exe back in the game folder.

Your done!
Closing Statements
Thanks for reading this guide, this is the first one I have written, and I did the best I could. I hope this helped you in some way, and if you have any questions or see something wrong, feel free to correct me in the comments. I may or may not make a tutorial on getting some bigger mods working, and setting your game up to be a bit more like a survival game, let me know if you'd like that. Thanks!

Is there a way in the INI files to limit the game to running at 60FPS? I have it running but it's way faster and I think prompts crashes.

Disabled GFWL and did the INI changes. Still crashes instantly

Look Up FOTTW (Tale of Two Wastelands) Mod. It combines FO3 and FONV into one game using the NV engine and bypasses all of the bugs in FO3. You can actually play the game and use NV mods on FO3. Youre welcome.

No downloads available at Nexusmods anymore. Probably a violation offer any way to get a game I own to run again.

Radio stutters most likely not. It can help and fix crashes in some instances though. It's case by case.

You're going to want to try and run it in compatability mode for WIndows (Insert version here)

I normally use Vista because I use Win 7 still. Aside from that you're going to want to play with the settings a bit and try opening it in windowed mode.

If all fails, verify integrity.

Did you mod this game previously on this PC/Steam account?
