This will boost FPS and simplify graphics. To do this run the game once with following line inside launch options:
After this, remove it to prevent video settings being overriden every startup.

Following line will disable intro video, joystick support, force the game to use system (Windows) mouse parameters and enable console on startup. Add it to launch options.

Consists of Chris' maxframes config (https://chrisdown.name/tf2/) modified for use with HL2:DM, workaround for team switching (F10-F12 keys), and misc. tweaks. Put this[raw.githubusercontent.com] file to "Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life 2 Deathmatch\hl2mp\cfg\" (Windows).

Default HUD and crosshair are not the best option in terms of clarity and visiblity. I strongly suggest you to install custom HUD and crosshair. There is serveral guides on this topic available in this section for further research. I will also provide a download of HUD+crosshair that I use myself, if you are looking for something that "just works" and bether than default. Download this[github.com] archive and extract it to "Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life 2 Deathmatch\hl2mp\custom\".

Hard way:

Open Registry -> 'regedit'

Navigate to :

HLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Video/

Now under Video find the Key that has a '0000' subkey which has a 'umd' subkey.

eg. for my system its:

HLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Video/{62B0C7BD-B807-45BE-8AAC-3176AB0DBF51}/0000/umd

Under 'UMD':

Create a String Named 'LodAdj' and assign value between -5 (Crisp Detail) to 5 (Faded Detail) .

- LodAdj set to 5. Now it should run at any toaster with GPU supporting DirectX 8.0, and nothing will distract you from gameplay!
