Introduction
Hello, Space Liberators!

Getting destroyed by the same attacks continuously? Always that one attack that kills your multipliers? Thinking some bosses are impossible? Well fear not! I am here to exchange some valuable words that will help you out in your quest of taking down the mothership!

This is the first guide I've ever made, so I will apologize in advance if the guide is a bit messy or a bit too big. Also, this guide won't be finished from start: I will keep adding content until I'm done with it.
Bombers
Bombers are the stage 1 bosses of this game. They're relatively small - and because of that, it can be hard to continuously get good shots on them. But in return for their size and agility, they don't have a lot of HP and have attacks that are easily dodgeable and allow you to point-blank them a lot of the time.

I guess every slightly decent player wouldn't have any trouble with bombers to begin with, but there are a few attacks that can be annoying at certain times and they might reset your multiplier bonuses back to x1. So they're still worth a guide.

There are currently 4 Marks of bomber. I will evaluate their attacks and explain techniques to not get hit by them.

MK-I

This is probably the most annoying bomber. It has very fast attacks that can surprise you if you aren't prepared and can let you take some stupid damage if you aren't careful.

His first attack summons two green orbs that shoot a focused flurry of blue orbs either to the left or to the right, along with 3 aimed Red blasts. The first attack always seems to let the upper one shoot to the left, so move down when the 3 blasts appear, then move back and go up when the next 3 blasts appear, repeat until he starts his next attack.

Aimed 360° spread shots. Simply stream (slowly moving up or down so that all the bullets just miss you while you do minimal effort) the attack and change direction when you see a gap.

This is the attack I hate the most, of all possible Bomber attacks. Green bullets burst into inaccurately aimed red shots. Best way to deal with it is just to frantically circle around the boss. You could try and move from the upper border of the screen back to the lower, in case you want to stay on the left. But I'd recommend to just circle around him, especially if you got something like homing missiles or gunbots.

MK-II

This guy isn't that terrible, in fact, he's probably the easiest bomber. The only danger is his first attack since it's pretty fast and makes it hard to hit him with a (literally) straightforward weapon.

First attack consists of fast blasts that are shot forward. This attack is scary, it requires you to quickly get inbetween the blasts if you got a simple weapon that shoots forward. Best way to do it is to move up, then back down inbetween the shots, then up, then down etc. You can also start below and move up. Moving a bit back when inbetween the shots and moving forward when safe (circular movement) gives you more reaction time and maybe a bit more time to shoot the boss.

Agressive aimed attack. Again, streaming, meaning that you should slowly move up or down. Starting at the top or the bottom makes it easier because it gives you more space to stream.

Green "bombs" that split into 3*12 shots, having 30° angle inbetween all of it's shots and always has the same angles. Following the boss downwards should usually allow you to stay in the "safe zone" where no shots will get you. Just don't move frantically and you should usually be fine.

MK-III

I guess this bomber is a bit more intimidating than the other ones, it shoots a lot of bullets. Luckily all of his attacks aren't difficult.

A bunch of expanding green bullets get shot. This attack is very easy, usually you can just keep firing at the boss, just hiding at the very left of the screen. You'll notice it quick enough when you have to move out of the way. You will never get cornered or walled.

5 agressive green flurry shooter bullets suddenly pop up and shoot in 5 lines while the boss zigzags. This attack can catch you by surprise because the one before that was extremely easy and slow. Just move past the lines and zigzag with the boss.

The boss shoots 3 "swirls" of bullets, closely resembling this attack from another game. Just move in circles with the waves, and preferably use homing missiles or bots when behind the boss. You can also be a real badass and squeeze your ship through the waves, but it's very difficult and only recommended to those with experience, and most of the time it's not even possible.

MK-IV

This bomber is very simplistic. Anyone with shooter experience should be able to obliterate him.

Summons green bullets that in turn summon 3 red aimed shots. Very easy, just don't move a lot when he's shooting.

Shoots 180° spread shots up and down. You can try to zigzag through the waves or dodge inbetween the bullets. Zigzagging is a bit nicer to do, but it shouldn't matter too much since it's easy anyway.

This is a very intimidating and surprising attack, but to its core it's a simple spread shot. Try to stay on the same horizontal line as the boss, just a bit higher or lower. This way you will dodge inbetween the blue bullets. Don't go behind him since he will shoot red bullets from his butt.
Frigates
Frigates are basically larger, scarier bombers. They are a bit bigger, but they still have pretty much the same agility as bombers, more health and also have attacks that actually can fill up the screen quite a bit. Still, frigates aren't all that dangerous, and most of the time you will still be able to not get hit at all if you just try a little bit.

There are currently 3 Frigate marks

MK-I
Just like with the bombers, the first one is the most annoying one.

His first attack consists of constantly shooting green shots. He shoots 1 green shot, which splits up into 4 red shots, which in turn split up into 2 blue shots. It might be a bit hectic, but it´s a simple attack. Line up with a red shot to make sure you won't get hit (because the 2 blue bullets that will come from the red shot can never hit you then).

Possibly the most simple boss attack in the game, but it can come as a surprise if you weren't prepared for it, and it also kills all your gunbots almost immediately if you have them. Just slowly move up or down, preferably line up with the boss constantly, and when at the edge, slow down a little more. Very easy streaming.

This is a a scary attack for such an easy boss. A red blast gets shot which leaves green bullets that create high speed blue bullet vertical lines. Make sure you don't line up with the green bullets, and dodge the aimed red shots by moving vertically. The blast always seems to go to the upper left of the screen. You're quite safe behind the boss but when the previous attack comes back you might be caught off guard.

MK-II
I like to call this frigate the "Cirno", since it's attacks slightly resemble those of a certain stage 2 ice fairy. And just like her, this frigate is not very strong :^).

First attack consists of simple spread shots. Just dodge. Preferably dodge the ones that have the most horizontal angle. This will make it a lot easier to attack the boss and to ensure that you know where the bullets are.

Second attack resembles Bomber MK-III's first attack, only this one's way more dangerous. The bullets come out faster, the explosions are bigger, and the ship agressively charges to the left after his shockwave burst. Track the green bullets to make sure that you won't get stuck inbetween explosions.

Shoots flurries in a cross shape. This always starts with a + shape, then an X shape, and then it ends with another +. You can simply get close to the boss, wait at a 45° angle, and quickly move into his horizontal line after his first + shot, and when the X shot has been fired, move out of his + attack range.

MK-III
I always get this guy. Good thing he's probably the easiest one.

First attack is a joke for anyone experienced with bullet hells. Just stay on the very left, move to the right when the 2 bullets are about to close you in, move back and move up. If you have the blaster, this is all you have to do.

He shoots.... this thing. You can point-blank him with most shots. Just move with him and you should be fine. If you have gunbots and a bit of audacity, you can also move to the top/bottom, spam your bots and dodge in the small gap if he gets too close.

Sinus-like shots. Easy if you just stay really close to him all the time. Quite dangerous if you don't. And of course, if you use gunbots, sit behind him and destroy him completely.
Destroyers
Destroyers are a bit more impressive-looking, but most of the time they're still not really a danger.

There are currently 2 destroyers:

MK-I
This guy is boring and easy, but can still ruin a run if you can't deal with the rockets.

First attack is rocket spam. Prioritize shooting the rockets over shooting the boss. Stay at the very left to let the rockets line up a little. Dodging the rockets is very hard, just shoot them down with whatever you can.

Aimed 360° rings. The very first shot seems to have a random angle, but the rest is aimed. So slowly move up or down when the shots spawn.

Long lasting explosions get shot (don't ask me how that works), trying to lock you in so that he can wall you with his mega laser. Just move behind him before the attack even starts. Often, you can go to the very top/bottom and still bypass the explosions.

Aimed spam. Just stream like all other aimed shots.

MK-II
This destroyer is quite a bit more badass, and because of that slightly harder.

Aimed rings. Just stay on very left and move vertically like all other simple aimed attacks -_-

Gengetsu mode enabled. Well.... this is definitely not as scary as that. Stay where he is, until the bullets are at their place, then move inbetween them or you will get beamed. If you know your hitboxes really well, you can stay vertically inbetween a bullet and the laser and deal some extra damage and look cool.

Strange bullets, that start aiming for you after a small amount of time. Try to stay on the far left, and stream it like any other aimed attack, but a bit faster to make sure you won't get hit by the "late" bullets.

Green shots shoot 3 bullets in the typical spread formation, with some blue bullets to mess you up further. Pretty straight forward, just stay on the left, preferably not too high or low, and do your best with dodging.

Ring of long lasting explosions and a mega laser. Just get behind him.
Cruiser
This is the first ship that I kind of have to take serious. Although this guy should not be a threat if you have good upgrades and weapons.

Tries to lock you in with green stationary bullets. Then he starts attacking you with random shots and a red aimed blast. Stay on the very left again, to give yourself the most reaction time to see the random bullets. Calmly move up or down when a red blast gets shot. If you have gunbots or homing rockets, or anything like that, you can just sit in the lower right corner and spam.

He does.... this. You can dodge through the blue shots or see them as waves and zigzag between them. If they get dense, try and dodge through them. Big safespot for gunbots behind him of course, apart from the red blast still attacking you.

He shoots green orbs up that shoot 12 blue shots. Don't try and dodge the green shots in the middle, just go under him. Yes, you can do that, go to the very bottom and he won't ram you.

Locks you inbetween 2 lasers, one will stop and he will start shooting a flurry of bullets. If a laser fades, get out. If you go further away you get more reaction time, but to hit more bullets you can sit a bit closer to him.

Panic attack. Bullets seem to have a random angle. Very scary attack. Stay on the left, pay attention to any bullets that could possibly come close to you, and just pray that RNGesus is with you. If he gets really close you can go to the right/bottom/top but that means you have to dodge more so I don't think that's worth it.
Carrier
This thing is a real terror, and separates the good runs from the bad ones. It's recommended that you have at least 1 weapon that isn't focus-fire. Things like the Supergun, Shockwave and Bots will save you some pain that comes from the enemies it spawns. Also, a splash/piercing weapon works against the laser ships it summons in it's second attack.

Sets up a shield and spawns tons of those tiny fighter ships. You can sit on the same vertical line as the shield if you go under the shield. It's a good place to set up gunbots under the shield.

Don't use the blaster to kill off the shield, use your other weapon instead. To me it felt like most energy weapons just melt the shield almost immediately. Kill the little fighters quickly, as if they were homing rockets from the Destroyer. Piercing weapons and spread weapons work really well against anything this boss spawns so try to use those.

This is one of the most intensive attacks in the game, if not the most intensive one. The shield disappears, the carrier starts summoning more small fighters AND laser ships. And once in a while, it shoots green bullets which rapidly summon blue bullets that go up or down. Keep your eyes open, this attack is very random but never really walls you or is unfair, as long as you keep reacting to everything that gets thrown at you. Stay a bit in the back, preferably use something like the Supergun or Hyperblaster to kill the fighters, and always try to get out of the way for the green bullets. If you're "encaged" by the green bullets while there are aimed fighter bullets coming at you, move vertically.

This attack is extremely hectic, there is no real main strategy, it tests your upgrade build and your own bullet hell skills to the max.
Battleship
This ship probably scared off a lot of players to get any further in the game. It's attacks are quick, dense, and very powerful (most of its bullets seem to deal 2 or 3 damage).

This one can be scary if you don't know the strategy behind it, which is why I'm showing a video instead of an image. When the boss fight starts (or in the "cutscene"), hold left! The first four bullets should miss you. When the next shots appear, start streaming. Just keep moving up slowly, and when you stop hitting the boss, start moving down. You can also tap up-down-up-down each two red shots, but be sure to time it right, since the blue shots can make this difficult. Here is a video of mine, demonstrating both techniques: the streaming one, and the zigzag one.

"traps" you in blue bullets, shoots red blasts at high velocity. Just slightly move up or down when the "last" red blast has been shot of the three. This attack is easy, but the red blast deals a ton of damage, so make sure you actually dodge it!

The first green bullet might or might not be aimed. Anyway, make sure you dodge that first bullet since it can surprise you. When the blue bullets start moving, go to the bottom left on every odd wave, and top left on every even wave. It's not 100% safe, but the least amount of bullets show up there and the bullets there are more predictable. Fun attack, gives some peace inbetween the other attacks he has.

Blue bullets are aimed, red bullets are random. Again, stream the blue bullets. Try to pay as much attention to the red bullets as possible, they are really fast and you need to macrododge them if they are on your path. Either move slowly or really fast during this attack, otherwise the blue bullets will be everywhere.

Dangerous attack. Be sure to always be moving up or down a little when you're on the left of him. If he gets too close, go behind him. Make sure you always do this from above! This way you are further away from the "death flurry". When he starts moving back, start shooting at him again.
Mothership
Coming soon.... hopefully. I'm a lazy ♥♥♥♥
Final tips:
Hold onto your first weapon! The blaster is a super decent weapon against every boss. It's super effective against most, if not ALL bosses! I can get through each boss with the blaster without too much trouble, except for the Carrier. Keep your blaster, and get another secondary simply for utility or wave destruction.

A lot of attacks simply require you to stream. Almost each boss has at least one attack that involves bullets directly being aimed at you. When a new attack starts and you don't know what to expect, always tap up or down until you know what the attack is to prevent getting hit by quick aimed bullets. This will save your ass on later bosses!

A lot of bosses have attacks that leave behind giant safespots/sweetspots or allow you to create safespots. Place as many bots as you can in there, bots can attack from any angle and so, usually putting them behind the boss when he's doing an attack that only is dangerous if you stay on the left, allows you to stack many bots together and just make the Space Pirates feel ashamed of their terrible engineers. Bots (luckily) got some big nerfs at the time I'm writing this, but this is still a viable strategy and hopefully it will become more viable again in the future.

Don't feel intimidated by the attacks. If you feel overwhelmed, you won't be able to analyse what's going on on screen and you can't develop a good strategy yourself. Just try and stay calm. And in case you go game over: listen to the next tip!

The game over screen shows the boss in the background, still attacking. In case you died to an attack that you haven't seen before/don't know how to deal with, just look at it. An important thing to mention is that when you die, the boss thinks that you are in the middle of the screen, so all aimed shots go through the middle. Use this to discover if you can stream an attack or not.

Doing bosses well means that you won't lose multiplier. Since bosses give a lot of points, killing a boss while you have a high multiplier means that you will get insane amounts of points. Especially late-game bosses give many, MANY points, so if you want to have a shot at the leaderboards, you have to be able to deal with the late game bosses.

Great guide!
Can you add how to beat certain pre-boss levels. Some are very hard not to lose health.

i just get 2 drones, preferably bullet and cryo, and spam fire and swap. they function as a shield, and a damage dealer. it allowes me to complete all boss fights up to and including the carrier in 30-40 seconds. most between 10-20.:steamhappy:

Today I learned that bots can still be useful against the final boss as an alternative to a shield because they negate a single bullet, thus opening up a bigger gap in the pattern sometimes.

Great guide! There is another strategy against Battleship in the first atack type. Timed correctlly, you can dodge in a LARGE zig zag between the red bullets saves. You can fool the blue bullets making a small stop between them, so the aimed blue bullets will aim the way you just left of. I use this strategy because my micro-movement dodge is not so good. :sdnsad:

It's been a while (almost a year) since I touched this game, but I think that that isn't too optimal. If you just sit on the far left and vertically in the middle, you can sit on the same line and only have to dodge vertically once in a while. Maybe it's a better place for botspamming if your bots have range.

Also, i just found a spot for the cruiser at the first phase, when he tries to block you, you can go to the upper left and there is a straight line for you to dodge the shots and, if you have a weapon with high spray, you can hit it.
Yatsuzume  [author] 27 Jul, 2016 @ 9:35pm
@xytan yeah, that counts for a lot of attacks though so I didn't feel like it was worth mentioning
Nitrogen Trichloride 18 Jul, 2016 @ 7:25am
You might want to say for the cruiser MK-1, first phase, that it is extremely dangerous to stay under the Cruiser, since you have a lot less free time to react to the red bullets, and that bots will most likely take all the shots and die. Otherwise it's a very good guide, thank you for these strategies.

well thats sad, beacause i probably will never beat this game :(
