So, you want to learn about fishing in Terrarian ways, figure out fish locations, or figure out why in the living Underworld you can't fish up what ya want. You found the right place,as I have the first two things, and I can help with the 3rd personally! Now lets get started before you leave out of boredom and waste more time. I'm [FSDep] Gardevoir, and you should grab your fishing rod and bait.

Now for the most important part of fishing, its the super high-tech stick that magically makes fish come out of nowhere, AKA the Fishing Rod/Pole.
I'll go over these in order in the picture, not of value (considering some DONT even have values).

Golden Fishing Rod: 50% Fishing Power, recieved after completing 50 quests from the Angler. It is the best Fishing Rod.

Fisher of Souls: DISCLAIMER: Does not give out free souls. 20% fishing power, made out of 8 Demonite Bars.

Hotline Fishing Hook: Warning: May cause burns. 45% Fishing Power, allows fishing in LAVA. 2nd best rod. Recieved as a reward from the Angler after 25 quests in hardmode (1/150 chance).

Fiberglass Fishing Pole: Fiberglass is a type of plastic. 2% chance of finding it in Jungle Shrines (In my opinion, skip it). It has 25% fishing power.

Sitting Duck's Fishing Pole: Hey, dont walk away, its just an expression! Its sold by the Travelling Merchant. Has 40% Fishing Power.

Wood Fishing Pole: Made out of a small handful of wood, this one has the smallest amount of fishing power, and is probably your first. It has 5% fishing power.

Reinforced Fishing Rod: Oddly, it looks like the Wooden Pole with reinforcements (maybe because of the name). It is your second pole, and has 15% fishing power, and is made out of a handful of iron, 8 to be exact.

Mechanic's Rod: You wont see her fishing, sadly (RED ADD THAT). Sold by the Mechanic on a Waning Cresent Moon (seen below) during Hardmode. It has a Fishing Power of 30%.


Fleshcatcher: Like the FoS, doesnt catch flesh (if you count fish as flesh, I guess it does...). Its made out of 8 Crimtane bars and has a Fishing Power of 22%.

Now, your second tool is bait!

Your bait is the ammo for your weapon of mass fish destruction. Bait comes in many forms, mostly fake bait, grubs, and insects. I will go through lots of finger torture of typing for you guys.

Master Bait: Im not a pervert, it has 50% bait power. Found in Crates and as rewards.

Journeyman Bait: 30% BP. Found in Crates and as rewards.

Apprentice Bait: 15% BP. Found in Crates and as rewards.

Blue/Pink/Green Jellyfish: Not the enemies, theyre smaller versions. all have 20% BP. Can also be crafted into Fishbowl like placements.

Tree Nymph Butterfly/Golden Butterfly: Both have 50% BP, but the Gold one... SELL OR KEEP IN A BOTTLE, IT SELLS FOR 10 GOLD. Found randomly during daytime.

Purple Emperor Butterfly: 35% BP. Found randomly during daytime.

Red Admiral Butterfly: 30% BP: Found randomly during daytime.

Julia Butterfly: 25% BP. Found randomly during daytime.

Ulysses Butterfly: 20% BP. Found randomly during daytime. (OK, all butterflies are found randomly during daytime.)

Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly: 15% BP.

Sulphur Butterfly: 10% BP. Does not explode.

Monarch Butterfly: 5% BP.

Lightning Bug: 35% BP, found during the night in the Hallow.

Firefly: Lesser version of Lightning Bugs, 20% BP. Found at night in the Purity (Forest).

Black Scorpion: Found rarely in the Desert. 20% BP. I recommend caging it, since its rare.

(Orange) Scorpion: Found rarely in the Desert. 15% BP. I recommend caging it, since its rare.

Worm: Found by breaking background rocks on the surface. 25% BP. Easiest bait to find in my opinion.

Enchanted Nightcrawler: NOTE: NOT FOUND NATURALLY. Its a worm enchanted by the power of a glowing star (AKA Worm + Fallen Star = This). 35% BP. Once you collect all your Mana Stars, I recommend crafting these.

Gold Worm: DONT USE, SELL FOR 10G. Found rarely in the same way Worms are found, but are very rare. 50 BP.

Glowing Snail: Found in the Glowing Mushroom Biome. Not very common, 15% BP. I like trapping one of these guys, theyre pretty.

Snail: 10% BP. I never find these common enough to use as bait, and I doubt you do either. I usually ignore them.

Grasshoppers: 10% BP. They uncommonly appear when you break grass background blocks.

Gold Grasshopper SELLSELLSELLSELL. 50% BP.

Grubb: Blue.... thing found in the Jungle after you break a plant.

Sluggy: The rarer of the "Uggies." 25% BP, break Jungle Plants to find.

Buggy: The rarest of the Uggies. 40% BP. Break Jungle Plants to find 'em.

Truffle Worm: Not exactly a bait, it has 666% BP (BAD). Used to summon Duke Fishron. You cant use it to catch fish.

Btw, the Uggies can be made into Grub Soup at the Cooking Pot. 1 of each to craft.

BTW AGAIN: All bait can be put into the Ammo slot! (Thanks Red!)

This kid is found by walking over to the ocean and seeing his sleeping body floating towards you or lying on the beach. Speak to him to make him move in. Hes a pain, and often calls you things that usually mean servant. He gives you rewards for fillng out his daily quests. His quest bubble is a small story (and maybe what he wants to do with it), a picture of the fish he wants, and where to find said fish.

TIP: Collect 2 of each quest fish! Catch one fish, throw it out of your inventory, catch another, click on the recently caught fish, suck up the 1st fish, and place the 2nd fish back in your inventory. You arent able to catch or pick up a 2nd quest fish after you pick it up.

Now heres where stuff gets wierd. All our fishing things have MAJOR gimmics I never understood until now. The moon phases, time, weather, and depth of your lake is VERY important. The deeper the better, the closer to rain the better, the closer to 6 PM/AM the better, and the fuller the better. Heres some stupid tables:

Building a Bait Farm may be ideal if you want. YouTube is your place if you want one.

It could be smart to stock up on Crates and open them in Hardmode to avoid mining and get armor and weapons quickly.

As a Summoner class user, I find Fishing very useful to buy all those expensive items. Fishing = Quests/Crates/Loot/Fish = Its raining Gold Coins!

According to what I last said, its also an easy way to stock up on Coin Gun (Pimp Gun) ammo.

Its possible to get the Hardy Saddle from Gold Crates, but its basically useless, and by the time you get the Neptune's Shell, you'll be close to grabbing a Shrimpy Truffle.

Golden Koi act like Golden critter versions, and sell for 10 gold.

If you're REALLY lazy and dont want to find those chests but have a bunch of Gold Keys, set up a lake and fish your heart out!

04:29-04:30 is the times for a new day, you get 24 Ingame hours to do a quest. Carry around a Platinum/Gold watch to remember how much time you have left!

By doing quests for the Angler until you get a Bottomless Water Bucket, you can easily set up a giant lake to fish anywhere.

Sky Lakes are Floating Islands that are hallowed out and flooded. Basically a free lake!

Now you have reached the end of your Fisher's guide. You are now a Platinum Angler(tm), and you are ready to return to your world, as a fisherMAN.
