Battlefield 2 (BF2), just like many other games, rely on the Gamespy network for its online multiplayer. The Gamespy shut down in 2014 forced the end of the online multiplayer aspects of many games including Battlefield 2. Around the same time, EA dropped all support for Battlefield 2, and both EA and Steam stopped selling Battlefield 2 altogether.

Around the time of the Gamespy shut down, the community based Revive BF2 started creating a network which will still let the community play online and also keep as close as possible their previous Gamespy online rankings. The Revive BF2 network is now providing online services for the remaining BF2 community:

This network is created and maintained by the community and are not affiliated in any way with the creators/sellers of Battlefield 2.

Since BF2 is not sold anymore by Steam/EA, those who don't have the game can download the full game for free from the website. Installation -> registration -> you are all ready to play.
Those having already owned BF2 (any version - EA CD/Steam/digital download etc) only need to register, install the small launcher and start playing on the network.

Revive BF2 derive players stats data as at the time of the Gamespy shutdown from http://spieler-daten.de/, and progress from there with some community introduced modifications - eg. all weapons are unlocked very early in the low levels etc.

It is also hoping to introduce whatever possible/reasonable community requested additions/changes to the game.

The size of the Revive BF2 community is steadily growing - more servers are appearing on the network and more players are playing online. There are also community organized events/tournaments/giveaways.
