By Vandal Savant
How do I pick things up? How do I use them? How do I swim underwater? How do I split stacks? How does my nameless hero become fight? All these questions and more are answered.

This is a guide of my collected knowledge and answers to questions I had to scour Google to find. I hope it aids the convenience of others.

To switch to Alternative keybindings, go into Settings > Keyboard > Alternative Setting.
Moving & Swimming
Standard Movement
W - Move Forward
Q/E - Turn Left/Right
A/D - Sidestep Left/Right
S - Step Backward

This isn't the same as backpedaling that we know and love in other action RPGs but is a good way to try getting out of a stagger-lock - or dodge attacks completely.
W + Alt/RMB - Jump
Allows you to climb some low ledges and get a small boost of speed when running - at the economic cost of looking like a flailing idiot. When held you'll bunny hop.
Caplocks - Toggle Walk

Swimming
When in water deep enough you can dive beneath the surface by pressing Alt/RMB. To move around:
W - Turn Down
S - Turn Up
Q/E - Turn Left/Right
Alt/RMB - Swim Forward

You can also use the mouse for controlling your direction, albeit inverted.
Ctrl+W: Using items and interacting with the world
Going forward, note that Ctrl can be substituted with LMB in all instances, in the same way RMB can substitute Alt.
Thanks to namelesshero for pointing this out.

Learn to love Ctrl+W because you will develop muscle memory for it. It's basically the A button of Zelda in Gothic. Examples:

Used on..
• an item on the ground; picks it up.
• a non-hostile npc: talks to them.
• corpse: open loot window.
• torch post while holding a torch; lights it.
• cook pan: cooks raw meat in your inventory.

It's also how to equip your gear and use items in your inventory when selecting them.
Inventory Management & Stack-splitting
You'll find chests to loot or store loot inside of - even though your inventory has no limit. At Old Camp, near the arena, there's a vacant shack with two chests that you can use without reprecussions. A nearby npc named "Guy" will direct you to it.

Basics
Tab - Opens inventory
A/D - Cycles inventory columns
W/S - Moves your selection in the column
Ctrl+W - Use selected item
Ctrl+S - Drop selected item

Barter/Storage/Looting
Ctrl+Q/E - Move items in 1 increment
Ctrl+A/D - Move items in 10 increments
Ctrl+Shift+A/D - Move items in 100 increments
Melee Fighting
Spacebar - Draw/Holster Weapon
Its hotkey number (1) can also be used.
Ctrl+W - Forward Attack
Your bread & butter move, stepping forward while attacking. When you gain weapon training this attack includes follow-up swings.
Ctrl+Q/E - Horizontal Attack
Stationary sweeping attacks. If you get a rhythm both keys can be used back-and-forth fluidly. Weapon training makes this much easier.
Ctrl+S - Block
Cannot be held.
A/D - Sidestrafe
Your character will remain facing the target he's engaged with while strafing.
Tilde (~) - Fight Unarmed
Lets you enter unarmed combat stance without needing to go into your inventory and unequip your weapon. Great for getting Mud to buzz off without angering guards.

@-$ilver- Hello. I have learned that to put away a lit torch, you have to have atleast 1 more torch in your inventory. Then you just CTRL+W on the unequiped torch in your inventory and the lit torch should safely transfer back to your inventory. Hope it helps. Take care!

I am not sure how to put away a lit torch. I can drop it to the ground when I go into a fighting stance. But when I pick it back up, it just stays in my hand. I have tried all manner of keys and quite a few combos, but I can not simply put the torch away.

@james sorry for the late comment. it has been awhile but i think there will be two inventory lists (in this case you and the chest) think you can move up and down arrows and use right/left arrows to switch from one inventory to another. Word of warning the game will let you over pay merchants when you are moving things back and forth

Just started the game for first time as I am new to Gothic. Went to the first chest and was able to hold CTR and W to open chest. I then see the chest contents but dont know how to take items from the chest to my inventory...

Find it amusing how things change. Back when gothic 1 was current i thought those graphics were insane. Not particularly on the topic of this thread but I'm having a glitch /distortion that flashes whenever i move. I am using an enb to play at a modern resolution. Back to the original reason for posting, i thought that games using WASD were horrible cause i hadn't been used to them

It's funny I never tried that ever. I appreciate you mentioning it.

I think you should have mentioned that you can use LMB instead of Ctrl in all instances

I know that feeling; I couldn't play MGS5: The Phantom Pain without knowing about previous chronological games (MGS2 and Peace Walker) but I didn't have a console to play them, and had issues getting an emulator running them, so I just watched playthroughs.

Mind that Gothic 2 also has a strange control scheme too (the development gap between Gothic 1 and 2 is roughly a year apart), so you may want to try finding a quality video series on LPArchive.org if worst comes to worst.
