Zellers

Zellers was founded in 1931 by Walter P. Zeller as "stores for thrifty Canadians". The chain began with the purchase of the fourteen Canadian locations of American retailer Schulte-United, all of which were in Southern Ontario. At its peak, the chain had 350 stores nationwide.

On January 13, 2011, it was announced that Target Corporation of the United States would purchase the lease agreements of up to 220 Zellers stores. On January 15, 2015, Target Canada filed for bankruptcy, announced that it would close all of its Canadian stores, and began liquidating their inventory. All stores closed on April 12, 2015.

The Canadian Collection stays retro. Even though Target Canada purchased most of the Zellers chain (and eventually folded), the big red 'Z' is still a nostalgic icon for many Canadians.

I have one or two more classic Canadian brands in the pipe, and then will return to current businesses. I'm also considering a Canada Landmark series that showcases attractions across the country and would love to hear your suggestions. Who knows, maybe the Vancouver Aquarium, MTS Centre or Citadel Hill will make it into your city!
