Unstoppable HardCore Ranged Commando
By n00bmaster69
This build is obsolete. Please feel free to read it through and get the experience, but many things changed and the character is already dead. TY.

After 160 hours of playing my favorite character I decided to show my little secret to you, great community members, who want to build an epic, almost immortal HC Commando (but it can't resists a temerity). This build is focused on survival (resistances) + ranged attack, and even damage output is a bit small the mechanism and tactics of this build may pin you down.

Skills
So, what is the skill mechanism?

Well, the skill mechanism is very, very simpe. As anyone with a little skill knows, Commando is part of Soldier and a part of Demolitionist. Hell, even the name itself means FUN! So, to enjoy the battle in the world of Cairn, playing as an HC means you have no chance to fail even once. So we need a health and a Will to survive. Max that stuff out at the beginning, it will help you survive the uprising hard battles. If you fail, Menhir's Will trigger and save your life. If you are not completely screwed.

Here comes the Demolitionist part. You need to inbue your ranged attacks with the serious stuff, so use those skills and max it out as you can, but after the soldier part (or divide the points as it suits to you, but the result should be the same). Do not forget the Grenado stuff - it will save you time and life many times. Looking on the flying boss, shortly after that rolling on the floor, confused by a 10k critical hit makes me laugh everytime, while another grenade aproaches his seriously damaged body....

So, this is the skill part. Lets move on the other part. resistances and other core build stuff.

Attributes, Resistances, etc.
Did I mention we need to survive, playing HC? Of course I did. So that's the reason we need resistances maxxed out badly. Do it by equipment, components, be cautious what part of game you encounter. If you deal with an occultist's threat, you need life leech resistance. There is nothing worse than instant death by life leech, etc.

See the picture. It is about core stuff. Put your points into Physique/Cunning (50/50), no Spirit at all. There is no need for it.

The following picture shows other importrant things. Do not trust the damage range - its the base damage, but this build can easily survive SoT HC veteran and do 2k critical every 10th shot.

Lets move on the next part - the stuff I wear and you should too.

Equipment and why I have it
So, this is the final part. I will list here the most importrant pieces of my gear, followed by screens of all the equipment.

The No.1 : Guardsman's Spaulders

THIS is the alpha and the omega of surviving. Guardian's Will. Beleive it or not, if you do not know this stuff, you will be dead sooner or later. It works next to Menhir's Will, so you have two failsaves upon a low health, but it can even revive you from the dead! You heard well, if you have 1k life and you receive 2k crit hit, this will save your ass...if its not bugged by the devs. But you cannot say what will trigger first, if Menhir of Guardian. P.S: Both skills need a shield. You have been warned.

No.2 : Shard of Menhir

Nice piece of Menhir, just look at it. No need for other description. Add a soul shard - 30% absorbed energy of enemy spells is very useful and saves you a lot of iron. A LOT. For potions.

No.3 : Spiriteater Bulwark

Great stuff, + 72% Vitality resistance, Radiant shield (for me useless, but before 80% ress all its quite useful against a boss or two), tuned with Radiant gem. Conversion of damage into health is a great bonus.

No.4 : Juggernaut

This is awesome. Look at this: 5% chance of knockdown, and the best part, upon critical trigger 6% + 450 health restored, 25% health regen boost, 80 health regen per sec (+ based char regen, quite nice, huh?), but it can trigger every 9 seconds! +1 Soldier skills is a desert....

With Grenado and 5% chance of knockdown there were many bosses unable to even stands on their feet. They were just rolling and dying on the floor....

No.5 : Outlaw's Retribution

A boost of explosive strike, damage, offensive ability, attack speed...

There is the rest of my stuff in a big picture.

I hope this short but accurate guide helps you out. The last thing to share is a short video where I fight Zarthuzellan, and, as You see, I am just immortal :) I triggered a health potion but it was by accident, since I have Menhir's and Guardian's Will, he can't defeat me.

@Gilmer Yup totally unusable, unbalanced class, not even viable. Crate surely never tests anything or allows certain combos of classes to be playable.... Most certainly a lazy bunch of devs, no doubt.......

So, is Commando a dead character class? I have one at 72.

Hey Cornballan, this build is obsolete as many things changed and I found it unplayable on higher difficulties. This build is from times where lvl cap was 50 and content released was approx. 50% of current. I will create another guide but for pure Shaman. I will mark this guide as obsolete because I am unable to answer the question as the character is dead :) In need of any questions / advices, please PM me. TY!

If you take a look at first comment and you would be familiar with developing of GD, the level cap was 50 and there was only one difficulty, and that was normal (Veteran Hardcore).

I really don't get why the Grim Dawn steam forums are flooded with people advocating op and unkillable builds when their not playing ultimate, or at lvl 85

Hey, yes I a, planning to update it yet I have not a lot of time. TBH, I found ranged commando as an weak side-build of meelee commando, because I have got the much higher DPS with a mace than with a one-handed gun. On this I like the meelee build more because game is unbalanced in this area a lot.

Are you planning on updating this guide? I'm liking the concept fo a ranged dps unkillable tank.

Yes, they released patch with 170MB+ size!!! today. I heard many players reported that after B31 update its similar as they are playing completely different character than in B30. Its not optimized, my fault....
Horus-fr 24 Feb, 2016 @ 2:06pm
ok thx for the update myself died playing pet build in veteran when i had basically only defense gear and was staying on the other side of the screen nowhere near the champions so that's it for me in HC in this game, something must be off in their defense system
