Tips for trading

• Obviously buy low, sell high. Try to recount the prices in the last cities visited (use the tabs to see last 9 places). Most of the stuff only sells good in cities.
  
• Try to set a margin (use below figures or your own) and don't (ever) buy over that price.
  
• Always read the random events (celebrations, flood, etc). You may find yourself lucky to get a high profit trade along the way to where something happened.
  
• If you help merchants during random encounters (keep a few free mercs at hand) you may get special deals. Read them in the Book, prepare for them and execute the plan (Price:high means you can sell there for a good price. Price:low means you can buy cheaply).
  
• Avoid oil, arms, hill herb unless you know what you're doing.
  
• Don't be afraid to not buy and carry on travelling instead of taking bad deals. Quests yield money even if you don't trade along the way (as long as it covers the cost) so focus on that in the beginning.
  
• Start with simple food/hides villages => cities. Move up to Ore and get into Clothes. Jump to deal in Spice, Jewerly and Porcelain as the best deals are there.
  
• You start with 1 small cart. Invest in a second and third while increasing your social rank. Invest in faster horses. Jump directly to 1 Large-size once you can spare 10,000 and sell the small ones (around 15k each).
  
• Do the important quests: rank up to get access to more goods, get medallions from dark council for more discounts, get letters to avoid customs/inspections.
  
• Well after you first 100K, try to get a Sergeant and 30+ mercenaries and clear out ruins. Bring monks and more men and watch your quarterly income increase (see Investments section).

Goods (15):

• Food - Unlocked with rank 1 - Beggar. Good price to buy <=8. Prices go up in winter.
  
• Hides - Unlocked with rank 1 - Beggar. Good price to buy <=15.
  
• Clothes - Unlocked with rank 2 - Hawker. Good price to buy <=21. Especially nice to sell in winter.
  
• Wood - Unlocked with rank 3 - Trader
  
• Tools - Unlocked with rank 4 - Registered Trader
  
• Liquor - Unlocked with rank 5 - Citizen
  
• Olive oil - Produced in cities only. Unlocked with rank 1 - Beggar.
  
• Ore - Produced in cities only. Unlocked with rank 1 - Beggar. Takes up a lot of cargo space. Good price to buy <=36. Urgune is a good place to buy. Sell in cities for over 42.
  
• Carpets - Produced in cities only. Unlocked with rank 2 - Hawker
  
• Spices - Produced in cities only. Unlocked with rank 3 - Trader. Good price to buy <=65
  
• Jewelry - Produced in cities only. Unlocked with rank 4 - Registered Trader. Good price to buy <=75. May ocassionaly be forged if you don't have a jeweler you may get tricked and lose.
  
• Porcelain - Produced in cities only. Unlocked with rank 5 - Citizen. Good price to buy <=80.
  
• Arms - Produced in cities only. Unlocked with rank 6 - Captain. May get confiscated while you travel.
  
• Hill herb - Unlocked with rank 1 - Beggar.
  
• Ice - Unlocked with rank 1 - Beggar. Try the mountain areas.

Cart types(3):

• Small-size - 300 kg storage. Buy one only below 2,000 (below 1,800 is great).
  
• Medium-size - 700 kg storage
  
• Large-size - 2,000 kg storage. Buy one only below 10,000.
  
• Small fridge (for small/medium carts) - lowers your storage capacity by 100 kg and can only be used to store Ice properly.
  
• Big fridge (for large carts only) - lowers your storage capacity by 200 kg and can only be used to store Ice properly.
  
• Sea ship - with sea-partner - 35,000 storage

Random (good) events:

• Craps** - you can randomly play craps with another trader during land-travel. Useful only when you have low-value cargo
  
• Auction*** - you can randomly bid at an auction of another trader's wares during land-travel. Very useful later on when you have cargo capacity.
  
• Woman** - pay her 5 trigons to say her blessing. Do it to increase luck. Do it even if you maxed out, she will curse you if you do not pay.

  • Spyglass (Vane Hoz) - increases chances to avoid storms, patrols and dragons on sea

Investments can be bought or built and bring quarterly income. Which is very nice, but not accesible/doable in the first phases of the game. Most investments need a certain type of specialist to operate.

Hint: Other specialists, mercenaries or resources may speed production. Equipment to increase efficiency can usually be bought from the same location/university specialists can be trained in (and oddly enough multiple copies of the same book/equipemnt may be stacked together in the same location).

A. Mines

• can be found on the map. Locations (5): Mine Yerguli (Northern Island), Muddy Mine (Kingdom - North), Crystal Mine (Kingdom - NorthWest), Mines of Klashr (Kingdom - West), Dwarfen Mine (Kingdom - East)
  
• must be cleared of monsters first (a lot of mercenaries needed 30-40. having a map is very helpful, you can buy mine maps after giving drinks in taverns, having enough wood and clicking the hammer BEFORE something collapses on your party is the smart way)
  
• requires a Foreman to start production
  
• needs wood to operate / increase production
  
• equipment can increase efficiency / production: Wheelwright Book (bought at University), Lucky Pickaxe (bought at tavern)

B. Ruins / Monasteries

• can be found on the map
  
  • Water Locations (3): Lighthouse, Stone temple, Sea fortress - northern islands
    
  • Land Locations (3): Cromlech, Abandoned tower, Wine storage - mainland center
• must be cleared of monsters first (trained Sergeant is recommended before attempting)

C. Massage parlour

• can be found randomly in cities
  
• must be bought (immediately) from Town Hall
  
• require a Massage Manager to start production

• equipment can increase production: Water bed, Sauna, Funsutra, Venetian Mirror
  
• can produce blackmail that can be used at a palace (gives 10,000 in case of success)

D. Storages

• do not bring income
  
• can be found randomly in cities
  
• must be bought (immediately) from Town Hall (or it disappears)
  
• can store goods (max 35,000 kg) and specialists (max 2), but NOT as a shared storage, so try to remember where you store stuff ;)

E. Partnerships

• at most 2 partners are available: sea-ship partner (after you become Citizen), air-ship partner (after you become Merchant).
  
• can be found randomly in cities similar to quests. Update: can be refound after dismissal.
  
• can directly trade resources, specialists with the main character (like a moving storage).
  
• allow (better) travel via their air/sea ship, but only if travelling together.
  
• can be played as independent players travelling separately (see image down-left on the acting player at a current time). However this fragments the game a lot (1 turn = 1 day, one player may be on road while the other acts in a town/city).
  
• One can only fire and dissolve the partnership if both partners are in the same city, but only if the main partner acting is the original player selected (otherwise bug!)

Specialists can only be hired in taverns (sometimes may be found while travelling on land), can be leveled up (see locations), can be stored in storage (really, max 2 at a time), can be brought in investments to operate the investment (mine, ruin, massage parlour) or to increase production. You can carry max 4 at one time (though there is a special side-quest called Management quest for a max of 6 slots). Specialists can have 1 to 3 stars and may be trained, gaining a star for each training course up to max 3 stars at a certain training location depending on the type of specialist. Be aware that training courses take a while to complete - while the specialists will self-study "on the road", they don't gain the star until the course is over.

The other NPC/human resources at your disposal are grunt workers/non-specialists called mercenaries. They are useful for operating carts (can't get out of the city unless you have enough). Extra mercs can be used for defence during random attacks and for clearing ruins/mines. They can be found in taverns (in which case they ask for an upfront fee and a daily fee) or during random events while travelling on land (in which case there's no upfront fee, only a daily fee). You can see the total number and total daily fees in your books (hit B on the keyboard while in a village/town).

Hint: Always level them up to max before putting advisors to operate an investment / raise production since you can't get them back. (Update) You can now exchange them with a superior specialist (more stars) if re-visiting an investment with such a specialist in your party.

Specialists (grouped in categories)

• Advisors (operate or increase production in Investments):
  
  • Foreman - can be used to explore an abandoned mine and later to operate it
    
  • Elemental Monks - can be used to operate distilleries in abandoned ruins. Do not like water.
    
  • Monk of the Floral Goddes - can be used to operate distilleries in abandoned ruins. Do not like coastal locations.
    
  • Monk of the Sea Lady - can be used to operate distilleries in abandoned ruins. Needs to be located on the coast.
    
  • Masters of Botany, Irrigation, Fermentation and Aging - can be leveled up and put in monasteries to increase production
    
  • Monk of the Trigonate - can be used to operate distilleries in abandoned ruins. Does not like the sea.
    
  • Massage Parlour Manager - can be used to operate massage parlours
    
  • Masseur/Massager - can be put in massage parlours to increase production
• Traders (directly affect trading or customs):
  
  • Jewelers - can negotiate lower prices when encountering a forged jewel
    
  • Merchant - can negotiate lower prices
    
  • Negotiator - can help with bribes
    
  • Empire/Barbarian Trader - can negotiate lower prices with their nation
• Craftsmen (useful when travelling or fighting):
  
  • Sergeant - can be used to automate and improve clearing of monastery locations and improve defence from robbers/attacks.
    
  • Stevedore - reduces loses of cargo from storm and monster attack
    
  • WheelWright - repairs wagons during travel
    
  • Wind Charmer - speeds up sea travels
    
  • Sea Navigator - can shorten trips and avoid storms
    
  • Air Navigator - can shorten trips and avoid dangers
    
  • Enchanter/Master of Enchanting - can drive beasts away (useful against dragons).

Note: Never actually found a miner, though it is referred in Urgune's university as a trainable specialist!

Special travel locations are available. Besides land, you can travel via ship on sea/river (after you gain the Trader rank) and via air-ship (after you gain the Citizen rank).

• Air-ship ports (15): Asmor, Dunlaar, Fresta, Hyav, Nar, Narheym, Nortifore, Ovoros, Siltarra, Seetch, Tunengann, Urgune, Vane hoz, Varerg, Vergotto.

• River-ports (8): Asmor, Dunlaar, Naarheym, Ovoros, Siltarra, Tunengann, Vane Hoz, Vergotto

Besides the kingdom (mainland and 3 islands in the north), three other areas are known:

• Barbarians (2) - Reshun, Sharsuun. The West Mountains form a natural barrier.
  
• Empire (4) - Afvung, Narheym, Irgendvung, Varerg. The East River forms a natural barrier. Smugglers may help you get across.
  
• Pirates (1) - Seetch. Isolated in the North West Sea.

Shops/locations available inside Villages/Cities (and corresponding keyboard shorcuts):

• Basic Shops (villages/cities):
  
  • Market (M) - one can buy/sell any of the 15 goods the village/city produces or can consume. A list of the last 9 markets visited (with prices from that time) can be browsed as separate tabs. One cannot buy more than one's fleet can carry, even for the purpose of reselling inside the same market.
    
  • Tavern / Inn (T) - one can find and hire mercenaries (3 types, no actual difference) and specialists (many types, see the Specialists section) and pay for drinks trying to get information out of the folk present there (Lucky horn item may help getting right information). One can also play the Knife mini-game. Quests may be found here.
    
  • Workshop (W) - one can buy/sell/repair 3 types of carts, buy/sell fridges (only interesting for carrying Ice) and buy/sell faster horses (cannot buy more than current number of carts). A button in the upper left lets one buy miscellaneous items.
    
  • Guild - Only one exists, in Ovoros. Can find social ranking quests here.
• Intermediate Shops (usually only in cities):
  
  • Shrine (N) - one can buy a chance (via turning a card) to find a luck increase or some goods. Careful, as curses (lowering luck) can be bought as well.
    
  • Cantor (C) - one can buy/sell/identify items and buy/sell diamonds.
    
  • Air-ship port (A) - one can hire an air-ship to get to another air-port.
    
  • Sea-Port (S) - one can hire a river or sea ship to get to another port.
    
  • Storage (R) - one can buy and operate it (see the Investments section).
    
  • Massage parlour (O) - one can buy and operate it (see the Investments section).
• Advanced Shops (only in cities):
  
  • School / Academy / University (L) - specialists may be trained here (See the Specialists section). One can also buy items related to the speciality available in the academy/university.
    
  • Town hall / Kingdom Office (H) - quests may be found here. One can also buy some Investments (local parlors and storage facilities), buy items (local or global letters of safe-conduct). Rank needs to be at least Citizen.
    
  • Palace / Royal Court (P) - quests may be found here. One can also sell Herbs at the Party or serve Blackmail. Rank needs to be at least Bourgeois.
• Other locations (only in ruins/mines):
  
  • Outside - send a party for a chance of loot.
    
  • Inside - venture with a strong party to clear / take possesion of the ruin/mine (See Investments section). May receive loot (goods, unidentified items) after clearing.

There are 4 different types of quests which can be found in shops in cities. Clicking the left red pulsating marker in a shop will trigger the quest.

• Main Story Quests (Olivean de Calinn campaign) - Quests must be completed in order, but don't affect the balance of the game. No time-constraints usually.
  
• Rank-up Quests - Must be completed in order. Affect the balance of the game and other quests a LOT, simply put: having a certain rank gives you access on parts of the game that we're hidden before. Usually this makes your life as a trader easier. There are time-constraints, but time to complete a quest can be reset.
  
• Dark Council Quests - Another "social ladder" you can climb, no relation to the previous one. Quests may be missed as some are optional. Time constraints cannot be reset.
  
• Side Quests - Entirely independent quests that usually give money and items. Time constraints cannot be reset and quests cannot be redone once failed!

Hints:

• Plan ahead.
  
• Don't start too many quests at the same time.
  
• Quests can be seen in the "inventory". Be aware that you can prematurely filter 1 type and forget that time is ticking for other quests till you see a warning (!) of time expiration (and by then it's probably too late).
  
• Plan ahead (I can't stress this enough). Take into account the number of steps shown for the quest (when you see it in the inventory) (e.g. 4/7). And even if two quests take you to the same city next, they may very well diverge in the next step and you might need to reach opposite corners of the map at the same time. Even with air travel that may not be possible.
  
• Wording of the quests will usually indicate what your next step is and how to get there. If you did not understand it, check the abridged version of the quest in the inventory. However the most important hints on some quests are easy to miss as they don't appear in the abridged version (e.g. Between the wolves, Solid Ice). Nice hints once you solve them btw.

Main Quests - Olivean de Calinn

• 1/10 Merchant Guild - collect 4,000 trigons and go to Overos's guild.
  
• 2/10 The enemy of my enemy is my friend - Appears in Overos automatically. Go to Vane Hoz. Buy 50 Oil barrels. Go to Nortifore. Go to Dunlaar.
  
• 3/10 Path of the righteous man - Appears in Vergotto's market after you are a trader. Go to tavern. Go to Orse. Give 3 diamonds.
  
• 4/10 Tentacles reaches up here - Appears in Varerg. Go to Orse using smugglers.
  
• 5/10 Fisherman Jerrod - Appears in Hyav. Go to Zamco. Go to Hyav. Go back to Zamco.
  
• 6/10 Golden Gem - Appears in Reshun - 5 diamonds needed.
  
• 7/10 Sheep and wolves - Appears while travelling on the road between Dunlaar And Fasbam
  
• 8/10 Bloody pirate - Appears while travelling on the sea
  
• 9/10 Suspicious transports - Appears when you cross the river with smugglers. Go to Rochty. Go to Ovoros Palace, then Guild. Go to Zamco.
  
• 10/10 Like a fish caught in the net - Appears in the Ovoros market. Go by air to Vergotto. Spend 50 diamonds. Go back to Ovoros. Buy 50 Liquor (first discard if you have any). Go to Dunlaar and sell it. Go back to Ovoros.

Rank-Up Quests

• 1/10 Beggar - 0 steps. Your first rank. All other "social status upgrade" quests can be taken from the guild in the capital - Ovoros (Kingdom - Center)
  
• 2/10 Hawker - 1 step. Pay 500 fee to obtain. Need to have 5,000 wealth.
  
• 3/10 Trader - 7 steps. In 60 days visit Vergotto, Urgune, Asmor, Nortifore, Tunengann and Dunlaar. Don't go to any of them twice, don't leave the kingdom, return with 4,000 trigons profit. Pay 1,000 to obtain. Need to have 10,000 wealth.
  
• 4/10 Registered Trader - 4 steps. In 50 days buy & sell in profit 50 items of goods between Empire/Kingdom, Kingdom/Empire, Barbarians/Kingdom, Kingdom/Barbarians. Pay 1,500 to obtain. Need to have 25,000 wealth.
  
• 5/10 Citizen - 1 step. In 70 days travel to Vergotto then only by ship till you earn 10,000 trigons then come back to Vergotto. May travel on land only directly to Vergotto and back. Pay 2,000 to obtain. Need to have 55,000 wealth.
  
• 6/10 Captain - 4 steps. Buy 4 letters of safe-conduct from 4 different Town Halls of the Kingdom (not letters valid for Kingdom, only locally valid letters). Pay 2,500 to obtain. Need to have 120,000 wealth.
  
• 7/10 Guilds Man - 25 steps. Perform 25 side-quests / outside the guild (previous quests are already counted). Pay 2,500 to obtain. Need to have 250,000 wealth.
  
• 8/10 Merchant - 1 step. Set up a trade company by accepting partnership from a stranger in a tavern. Pay 3,000 to obtain. Need to have 550,000 wealth.
  
• 9/10 Bourgeois - 1 step. Obtain quarterly income (ruin/mine). Previous ruins/mines are counted. Pay 3,500 to obtain. Need to have 1,200,000 wealth.
  
• 10/10 Nobleman - 3 steps. Go to Royal Court / Ovoros. Go to Seeth, buy 100 Jewelery. Return to the guild. Pay 5,000 to obtain. Need to have 2,500,000 wealth.

Dark Council Quests

• 1 Fake jewelery - 2 steps - Appears in Orovos after you become a Trader. Go to Nar's tavern. Buy 10 Jewelery from market. Make a scene.
  
• 2 Barbaric matter - 3 steps - Appears in Nar after you become a Registered Trader. Buy a mask from Reshun trading any other item from Cantor. Go to Nar with the mask.
  
• 3 Wine for the caesar - Appears in Nortifore. Go to Vane Hoz. Buy 100 barrels of Liquour. Bring back to Nortifore. Go to tavern.
  
• 4 Scamming the pirates - 3 steps. Appears in Asmor. Go to Narheym by boat and let yourself be robbed. Go back to Asmor.
  
• 5 Merchants and smugglers - 2 steps. Appears in Dunlaar. Go to Varerg with the parcel via smugglers or air.
  
• 6 How to train your dragon - 4 steps. Appears in Tunengann. Go to Asmor. Take an airship to Vergotto. Go to the inn in Vergotto.
  
• 7 The mermaid song - Appears in Vergotto. Go to the shop here. Go straight to Narheym on a substitute ship (works even if not partenered currently!). Go to the office in Vergotto. Go to the inn in Vergotto. Receive Gold Medallion :) This triggers the achievement.
  
• 8 Between the wolves - Appears in Ovoros. Go to shop there. Other choices will make you lose medallion. Go to Ovoros' tavern then Nevoros' tavern. Go back to Ovoros. Go back to Ovoros' shop & betray. Go out and seek Kossos from the university in Dunlaar within 20 days. Enjoy Dark Council's chain.

Side Quests

• Solid Ice - You have to bring the man to a city that only appears in winter between Asmor and Yavli. That's the city you're probably missing for the 'Traveller' achievement. Excellent easter egg right in front of your nose!
  
• House with no Roots in the Ground - You have to pay 500 and go to Magnus in winter
  
• Management Training - Picked up in Seetch. Go to Reshun very quick. Buy 100 oil and ore. Go to another city. Sell oil for profit. Go to tavern and give a round to a guy. Sell ore in the market. Enjoy the 5th specialist spot ;)
  
• Influence Training - Appears in Narheym after you have acces to Royal Courts. Go to Ranta. Go to Ovoros/Dunlaar, buy rounds for ladies in disguise. Go to the market there. Go to ruins. Go to Royal court (don't go to office to report. Go to Ranta, enjoy specialist 6.

There are 22 achievements:

• Adventurer - Complete 50 quests.See the Quests section. All successful quests appear to be counted. See Current Statistics (left button) in the Game menu (rightmost and uppermost button)
  
• Bacchus - Become an owner of 3 operating vineries.See the Investments section. You will need 3 masters to operate.
  
• Careless - Take a loss on 3 transactions conducted in 3 different locations visited in a row.Transaction loss is counted when even one single resource is sold at a lower price than originally bought
  
• Dark Council - Obtain the highest rank in the Dark Council - the golden chain.Despite the title, there is an even higher rank. See the Council Quest section
  
• Double money - Within 50 days multiply your wealth twofold.Easier said than done. Pay attention that carts are somehow equivaled as tangible assets you may sell and therefore part of your wealth along with the money you see. Human resources are not counted towards wealth.
  
• Frequent Flyer - Travel with the airship 10 times in a row
  
• Gadgeteer - Collect 16 different items
  
• Great Adventurer - Complete 100 quests.Apparently this is doable even if you miss a quest. See the Quests section. See Current Statistics (left button) in the Game menu (rightmost and uppermost button) for currently successful quests done. To get to 100, you need to let a partner do some. E.g. sea-partner, equipped with enough money, luck, monster spotters/wind charmer/navigator. Sometimes firing and re-hiring your sea navigator will spawn some of his quests again (if failed)
  
• High frequency trader - Complete 50 transactions within 50 days.Transaction is counted when if one single resource is bought or sold. So you can score multiple transactions in the same screen with different resources.
  
• International trader - Complete 3 transactions in all 3 regions within 25 days. The 3 regions are Kingdom (most of the map), Barbarians (2 cities West of the mountains), Empire (4 cities East of the river)
  
• Jeweller - Collect 50 diamonds.Diamonds can be bought in cities and are actually needed in some quests. However you won't get rich selling them back.
  
• Jinx - Retain minimal luck for 25 days in a row.Minimum luck is -3.0. Don't visit shrines and be patient for random events in travels and you'll soon curse and get the achievement (or go bankrupt trying)
  
• Lucky - Retain maximum luck for 25 days in a row.Maximum luck is 3.0. Visit and pay at shrines in cities to get luck. Random events change your luck up/down.
  
• Millionaire - Collect 1 000 000 trigons.
  
• Miner - Become an owner of 3 operating mines.See Investments section.
  
• Monster Slayer - Kill your first monster.Search in ruins or mines. See Investments section.
  
• Mr Fogg - Visit all the sea ports within 80 days.Only the 10 sea (coastal/island) ports count (inner/river ports do not). List: Asmor, Fresta, Narheym, Parnu, Seetch, Vergotto, Verno, Vorbo, Yavli, Zamco. Pay attention to 2 of them: Verno is only accesible from Fresta and Vorbo; Zamco is only accesible from Fresta and Parnu. Also, having a skilled sea navigator helps reduce the travelling time!
  
• Multitrade - Buy and sell each of the available goods at least once.There are 15 types of goods. Ice is problematic, but one can buy it near the western mountains (random?).
  
• Real money - Collect 10 000 trigons.
  
• Supplicant - Buy 100 cards in the shrines.Shrines can only be found in some cities. Cards are expensive at first, but getting luck is very good overall. Try to spend money on the cheapest cards first. Eventually you'll get to 100.
  
• The Mole - Visit all mines within 60 days.There are 5 mines (see Investments section). Visited = actually clicking for a visit (even if you retreat afterwards) or clicking the production screen while visiting (if cleared/operating)
  
• Traveller - Visit all the locations.There are 52 locations. The map will show you how many days ago you visited them. If you count them again and there's still 51 in your list, you're still missing one ;) See the Side-Quests section.
