This will protect you from the explosion, while at the same time deaggro-ing the fist ooze, making him ignore you. This will let you focus on just the small ooze until the the big one is the last one left. It's a much safer method.
I've found that a lot of areas in Abyss can be cheesed by the door method, since a majority of spawned enemies that were tracking you will go into standby mode unless you either shoot them or get within their range. This allows you to engage enemies one at a time rather than having an entire squad after you. Makes the end of Zenobia much simpler, or the beginning of Abyss 3.
Doesn't work on Rachel, Scagdead, or Draghinazzos, though. They'll always track you since they don't have an idle animation to go into.
