How to Unlock the True Ending (Spoiler-Light Guide)

this guide will tell you what you need to do to complete the true ending of persona 5 royal with as few spoilers as possible.
i know guides like this already exist, but i was bored and wanted to write one for my friend who's about to start their first playthrough of the game.

persona 5 royal has five possible endings: two bad endings, the true vanilla ending (no longer canon), a happy ending, and royal's true ending (the canon one).

this guide will walk you through exactly what you need to do to unlock royal's true ending. if i missed anything, please let me know!

to reach the true ending, there are a few important choices to make throughout the game. here’s what to do when they come up:

after joker finishes telling his story in the interrogation room on november 20th, sae will ask if something is correct.
➡️ choose the first or second option.
sae will then ask another question.
➡️ choose the first option.
on december 24th, you’ll be offered something in the velvet room.
➡️ choose the first option.
on january 9th, you’ll be asked if you accept something.
➡️ choose the first option.
on february 2nd, you’ll be asked again, this time by a different character.
➡️ choose the first option.

how to unlock the 3rd semester

to access the third semester (royal-exclusive content), you must get maruki’s confidant to rank 9 before november 17th.
rank 10 will automatically trigger later if you meet this condition.

maruki’s confidant starts automatically on may 13th
it cannot be advanced past rank 5 until september 20th
before september 20th, maruki is available on mondays, tuesdays, wednesdays, and fridays
(but not if school is closed)
after september 20th, maruki is available every day except:
- september 28th
- october 4th & 6th
- november 1st, 3rd, 8th, 10th & 15th

optional, but highly recommended

while not required, completing akechi and kasumi’s confidants enhance the story and i strongly recommend doing them

kasumi yoshizawa (faith confidant)

to get the most out of the third semester and fully understand kasumi’s role in the story, you must get her confidant to rank 5 before december 22nd.

her confidant starts automatically on may 30th
she is found in kichijoji during the day
she is available on the following schedule:
- june, september, october and november: available on wednesdays
- july, august, december: may additionally appear on thursdays or sundays

goro akechi (justice confidant)

akechi’s confidant is not required for the true ending, but heavily expands the third semester story. you must reach rank 8 before november 17th to see his content in the third semester.

his confidant starts automatically on june 10th
he is found at night in kichijoji, outside penguin sniper
he is available on the following schedule:
- normally: wednesdays and saturdays
- from mid-july through august: tuesdays and saturdays
rank 6 is locked until september 3rd and takes place at leblanc

if you followed everything in this guide, congratulations — you’ve now unlocked persona 5 royal’s true ending!
