Why is this so hard?
You'd think a game based on a Hatsune Miku property would have a better built-in music player, or at least default to playing more than just one song all the time, yet here we are.

This is a guide to change the settings so that when doing the puzzles the game will choose a music track to play from the ones you've unlocked.
The TL;DR
Just follow these steps:
  1. Once in the game, get to the main living room menu.
  2. Click Settings at the bottom (or press Enter)
  3. Open the Sound menu
  4. Click the BGM tab at the top
  5. Select the first song in the list
  6. Select the Shuffle option from the list of songs (it's the last in the list, so scrolling up once should get you there)
  7. Choose either the middle option for vocals, or the right option for instrumental only versions
  8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 to set each option in the list to shuffle (they correspond to the song options for each character)
Detailed Steps
Same thing, but here's some screenshots if you're lost:

Once in the game, get to the main living room menu.
Click Settings at the bottom (or press Enter)

Open the Sound menu

Click the BGM tab at the top, then select the first song in the list

Select the Shuffle option from the list of songs (it's the last in the list, so scrolling up once should get you there)

Choose either the middle option for vocals, or the right option for instrumental only versions

Repeat the last few steps to set all of the track options to Shuffle. Each color option is apparently the track that plays for that character's puzzles. ("Other" being a category when doing the Special Puzzles)
I Hate This Song!
So once you have the tracks on Shuffle, what do you do if a song comes up that you just don't want to listen to?

Unfortunately, I haven't found a way to exclude specific songs from the shuffle list. However if you want to listen to a different song, basically just exit the puzzle and reopen it.

Press the Enter key or click the menu button in the bottom right:

Select the Pause option from the menu:

This will bring you back to the puzzle selection menu. You can open the same puzzle and it will resume where you left off.
Have fun!
Hope that helped. Why the UI is this convoluted or why the default is to play one song is beyond me. It's kind of embarrassing when you're representing a property focused on music. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hopefully the devs recognize the issue and improve this aspect of the game, making this guide obsolete.

On a similar note, as far as I can tell there's no easy way to include/exclude individual songs from playing as part of the shuffler. Hopefully they add that as a feature in the future, as there's certainly some songs I prefer more than others. (See the section above for a workaround.)

Thanks for reading, enjoy the game!
